1
ମାେ ଭାଇ ଓ ଭଉଣୀମାନେ ! ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କ ଭିତରୁ ଅନକେ ଶିକ୍ଷକ ହବୋ ଉଚିତ ନୁହେଁ। କାରଣ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଜାଣ ଯେ, ଆମ୍ଭେ ଶିକ୍ଷକମାନେ, ଅନ୍ୟ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କ ଅପେକ୍ଷା ଅଧିକ କଠାେର ଭାବରେ ବିଚାରିତ ହବେୁ।

Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.

ଆମ୍ଭେ ସମସ୍ତେ ଅନକେ ଭୁଲ କରୁ। ଯଦି ଜଣେ ଲୋକ କୌଣସି ଭୁଲ କଥା କହି ନାହିଁ, ତା ହେଲେ ସେ ଜଣେ ସିଦ୍ଧ ମଣିଷ ଅଟେ। ସେ ନିଜ ସମସ୍ତ ଶରୀରକୁ ମଧ୍ଯ ସଂୟତ କରିପାରିବ।

For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn't stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

ଘୋଡ଼ାମାନଙ୍କୁ ନିଜ ବଶ ରେ ରଖିବା ପାଇଁ ସମାନଙ୍କେ ମୁହଁ ରେ ଆମ୍ଭେ ଲଗାମ ଲଗାଇଥାଉ। ଆମ୍ଭେ ଏହିପରି ଭାବରେ ସମାନଙ୍କେର ସମ୍ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଶରୀରକୁ ବଶୀଭୂତ କରିଥାଉ।

Indeed, we put bits into the horses' mouths so that they may obey us, and we guide their whole body.

ସମୁଦ୍ରର ଜାହାଜ କ୍ଷେତ୍ର ରେ ମଧ୍ଯ ସହେିପରି ହାଇେଥାଏ। ଜାହାଜଟି ଆକାର ରେ ବହୁତ ବଡ଼ ଓ ଏହା ପ୍ରବଳ ପବନ ଦ୍ବାରା ଚାଳିତ ହାଇେଥାଏ। କିନ୍ତୁ େଛାଟ ମଙ୍ଗଟି ସହେି ବଡ଼ ଜାହାଜଟିକୁ ନିୟନ୍ତ୍ରିତ କରିଥାଏ। ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକ ଏହି ୟନ୍ତ୍ରଟିକୁ ଚାଳନା କରେ, ସେ ସ୍ଥିର କରେ ଯେ, ଜାହାଜଟି କେଉଁଠାକୁ ୟିବ। ସେ ଲୋକ ଯେଉଁଠାକୁ ଚା ହେଁ, ଜାହାଜଟି ସଠାେକୁ ଯାଏ। ଆମ୍ଭ ଜିହ୍ବା ନିମନ୍ତେ ମଧ୍ଯ ଏହି ବିଷୟ ସମାନ ଅଟେ।

Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet guided by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.

ଜିହ୍ବାଟି ଶରୀରର ଏକ ଅତି କ୍ଷୁଦ୍ର ଅଙ୍ଗ, କିନ୍ତୁ ଏହା ଅତ୍ଯଧିକ ମାତ୍ରା ରେ ଗର୍ବ କରିଥାଏ।

So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest!

ଜିହ୍ବା ହେଉଛି ଏକ େଛାଟ ଅଗ୍ନିଶିଖା ଭଳି। ଯେଉଁ େଛାଟ ଅଗ୍ନି ଶିଖାଟି ଗୋଟିଏ ବଡ଼ ଜଙ୍ଗଲ ରେ ନିଆଁ ଲଗଇେ ଦଇପୋରିବ। ଆମ୍ଭ ଶରୀରର ଅଙ୍ଗଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଭିତ ରେ ଜିହ୍ବା ହେଉଛି ସବୁଠାରୁ ମନ୍ଦ। କିପରି ? ଜିହ୍ବା ଆମ୍ଭ ଶରୀର ମାଧ୍ଯମ ରେ ନିଜର ମନ୍ଦତା ପ୍ରସାର କରେ। ଏହା ଏପରି ଅଗ୍ନି ସୃଷ୍ଟି କରେ ଯେ, ତାହା ସମଗ୍ର ଜୀବନକୁ ପ୍ରଭାବିତ କରେ।

And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.

ଜିହ୍ବା ଏହି ଅଗ୍ନିକୁ ନରକରୁ ପାଇଥାଏ। ମଣିଷ ପ୍ରେତ୍ୟକକ ପ୍ରକାର ହିଂସ୍ର ପଶୁ, ପକ୍ଷୀ, ସରୀସୃପ ଓ ମାଛକୁ ବଶବର୍ତ୍ତୀ କରିପା ରେ ଓ କରିଛି ମଧ୍ଯ।

For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.

କିନ୍ତୁ କୌଣସି ମଣିଷ ଜିହ୍ବାକୁ ବଶୀଭୂତ କରିପାରି ନାହିଁ। ଏହା ଅତି ଦୁର୍ଦ୍ଦାନ୍ତ ଓ ମନ୍ଦ ଅଟେ। ଏହା ଏକ ବିଷୟୁକ୍ତ ଘାତକ ଅଟେ।

But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

ଏହି ଜିହ୍ବା ଦ୍ବାରା ଆମ୍ଭେ ଆମ୍ଭ ପ୍ରଭୁ ଓ ପିତାଙ୍କ ଗୁଣଗାନ କରୁ, କିନ୍ତୁ ତାପରେ ପରମେଶ୍ବର ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ନିଜ ସାଦୃଶ୍ଯ ରେ ତିଆରି କରିଛନ୍ତି, ସହେି ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ଅଭିଶାପ ଦେଉ।

With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.

ଗୁଣଗାନ ଓ ଅଭିଶାପ ସହେି ଗୋଟିଏ ମୁହଁରୁ ବାହା ରେ ! ମାେ ଭାଇ ଓ ଭଉଣୀମାନେ, ଏଭଳି ହବୋ ଉଚିତ ନୁହେଁ।

Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

ଗୋଟିଏ ସମାନ ଝରଣାରୁ ଉଭୟ ଭଲ ଓ ମନ୍ଦ ପାଣି କ'ଣ ଝରି ଆସିପା ରେ ? ନା !

Does a spring send out from the same opening fresh and bitter water?

ମାେ ଭାଇ ଓ ଭଉଣୀମାନେ, ଡ଼ିମ୍ବିରି ଗଛ ରେ କ'ଣ ଜିତ ଫଳ ଫଳେ ? ନା ! ଦ୍ରାକ୍ଷାଲତା କ'ଣ ଡ଼ିମ୍ବିରି ଉତ୍ପନ୍ନ କରିପା ରେ ? ନା ! ଗୋଟିଏ ଲୁଣିଆ ପାଣିର କୂଅ କବେେ ମିଠା ପାଣି ଦଇପୋ ରେ ନାହିଁ।

Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water.

ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କ ଭିତ ରେ ପ୍ରକୃତ ଜ୍ଞାନୀ ଓ ବୁଦ୍ଧିମାନ କିଏ ଅଛି ? ତା ହେଲେ ସେ ଧାର୍ମିକ ଜୀବନଯାପନ କରି ନିଜର ବିଜ୍ଞତା ଦଖାେଉ। ସେ ନମ୍ର ଭାବରେ ଭଲ କାମ କରିବା ଉଚିତ। ଜ୍ଞାନୀ ଲୋକ ଗର୍ବ କରେ ନାହିଁ।

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom.

ଯଦି ତୁମ୍ଭେ ନିହାତି ସ୍ବାର୍ଥପର ଓ ତୁମ୍ଭ୍ ହୃଦୟ ରେ ଈର୍ଷାଭାବ ଅଛି, ତା' ହେଲେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ଗର୍ବ କରିବା ପାଇଁ କିଛି କାରଣ ନାହିଁ। ତୁମ୍ଭର ଅହଂକାର କବଳେ ମିଛ, ଏବଂ ତାହା ସତ୍ଯକୁ ଘାଡ଼ୋଇ ଦିଏ।

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and don't lie against the truth.
15
ଏହିପ୍ରକାର ଜ୍ଞାନ ପରମେଶ୍ବରଙ୍କଠାରୁ ଆ ସେ ନାହିଁ। ମାତ୍ର ଏହି ଜ୍ଞାନ ସଂସାରରୁ ଆ ସେ। ଏହା ଆତ୍ମିକ ନୁହେଁ। ଏହା ଶୟତାନଠାରୁ ଆସିଛି।

This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.

ଯେଉଁଠା ରେ ଈର୍ଷାଭାବ ଓ ସ୍ବାର୍ଥପର ମନୋଭାବ ଅଛି, ସହେିଠା ରେ ସମସ୍ତ ପ୍ରକାର ବିଶୃଙ୍ଖଳା ଓ ସମସ୍ତ ପ୍ରକାରର ମନ୍ଦତା ଦଖାଯାେଏ।

For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

କିନ୍ତୁ ପରମେଶ୍ବରଙ୍କଠାରୁ ଆସିଥିବା ଜ୍ଞାନ ଏହିପରି : ପ୍ରଥମ ରେ ଏହା ପବିତ୍ର, ଶାନ୍ତିପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ, ଭଦ୍ର ଓ ପ୍ରସନ୍ନ ଅଟେ। ଯେଉଁମାନେ ଅସୁବିଧା ବା କଷ୍ଟ ରେ ପଡ଼ିଛନ୍ତି, ଏହି ଜ୍ଞାନ ସମାନଙ୍କେୁ ସାହାୟ୍ଯ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ସର୍ବଦା ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତ ଥାଏ ଓ ଏହା ଅନ୍ୟମାନଙ୍କର ମଙ୍ଗଳ କରେ। ଏହି ଜ୍ଞାନ ସର୍ବଦା ନିରପେକ୍ଷ ଓ ନିଷ୍ଠାପର ଅଟେ।
17
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18
ଯେଉଁ ଲୋକମାନେ ଶାନ୍ତିପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଭାବରେ ଶାନ୍ତି ପାଇଁ କାମ କରନ୍ତି, ସମାନେେ ଧାର୍ମିକ ଜୀବନଯାପନ ଦ୍ବାରା ସେଥିରୁ ଉତ୍ପନ୍ନ ଉତ୍ତମ ବିଷୟମାନ ପାଆନ୍ତି।

Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
