एफ्राईम लोक गिदोनवर चिडले होते. त्यामुळे गिदोनला भेटले तेव्हा त्यांनी विचारले, “तू मिद्यान्यांवर चढाई केलीस तेव्हा आम्हाला का बोलावले नाहीस? आम्हाला तू वागणूक का दिलीस?”

The men of Ephraim said to him, Why have you served us thus, that you didn't call us, when you went to fight with Midian? They did chide with him sharply.

गिदोनने तेव्हा एफ्राईम लोकांना सांगितले, “माझे तुमच्या इतके चांगले चाललेले नाही. आमच्यापेक्षा तुम्ही कितीतरी जास्त पीक घेता. आम्ही अबियेजर जितकी द्राक्षे काढतो त्यापेक्षा जास्त द्राक्षे तर तुम्ही तशीच मव्व्यात पडू देता. हे खरे नाही काय?

He said to them, What have I now done in comparison with you? Isn't the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

याही वर्षी तुम्ही चांगले पीक घेतले आहे. ओरेब जेब या दोन मिद्यानी नेत्यांना तर परमेश्वराने तुमच्या हाती सोपवले. तुम्ही जे केलेत त्याच्याशी मी माझ्या यशाची तुलना कशी करु?” गिदोनचे हे उत्तर ऐकून एफ्राईम लोकांचा राग बराच निवळला.

God has delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison with you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

मग गिदोन आपल्या तीनशे माणसांसह यार्देन नदी उतरुन पलीकडे गेला. पाठलाग करताना ते सर्व थकलेले आणि भुकेलेले होते.

Gideon came to the Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men who were with him, faint, yet pursuing.

गिदोन सुक्कोथ नगरातील लोकांना म्हणाला, “माझे सैनिक फार थकले आहेत. त्यांना काहीतरी खायला द्या अजूनही आम्हाला जेबह आणि सलमुन्ना या मिद्यानी राजांचा पाठलाग करायचा आहे.”

He said to the men of Succoth, Please give loaves of bread to the people who follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.

तेव्हा सुक्कोथ येथील अधिकारी म्हणाले, “आम्ही त्यांना खायला का द्यावे? अजून तर तुम्ही त्या दोन राजांना पकडलेलेही नाही.”

The princes of Succoth said, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?

त्यावर गिदोन म्हणाला, “तुम्ही आम्हाला अन्न देत नाही तर जेबह आणि सलमुन्ना यांना ताब्यात घ्यायला परमेश्वरच आमच्या मदतीला येईल. मग मी परत इथे येईन. तेव्हा वाळवंटातील काटेरी झुडुपांनी मी तुमची चामडी लोळवीन.”

Gideon said, Therefore when Yahweh has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.

गिदोन मग सुक्कोथहून पनुएल शहराकडे निघाला. तेथील लोकांकडेही त्याने अन्नाची मागणी केली. पण पनुएल येथील लोकांनीही सुक्कोथ येथील लोकांनी दिले तसेच उत्तर दिले.

He went up there to Penuel, and spoke to them in like manner; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered.
9
तेव्हा गिदोन त्या लोकांना म्हणाला, “विजयी होऊन परत आल्यावर मी येथील मनोरा उध्वस्त करीन.”

He spoke also to the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.
10
जेबह, सलामुन्ना आणि त्यांचे सैन्य कर्कोर नगरात होते. त्यांच्या सैन्यात पंधरा हजार माणसे होती. पूर्वेकडच्या लोकांमधून जगले वाचले ते एवढेच त्यांचे एक लाख वीस हजार शूर योध्दे मारले गेले.

Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand men, all who were left of all the host of the children of the east; for there fell one hundred twenty thousand men who drew sword.

मग गिदोन आणि त्याचे लोक नोबह आणि यागबहा या शहरांच्या पूर्वेकडील राहुट्यांचा रस्ता धरून कर्कोर येथे आले व त्यांनी शत्रूवर हल्ला चढवला. शत्रू बेसावध होता.

Gideon went up by the way of those who lived in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and struck the host; for the host was secure.
12
मिद्यान्यांचे राजे जेबह व सलमुन्ना पळून गेले. गिदोनने त्यांचा पाठलाग करुन त्यांना पकडले. शत्रूसैन्याचा गिदोनच्या सैन्याने पाडाव केला.

Zebah and Zalmunna fled; and he pursued after them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and confused all the host.
13
त्यानंतर हेरेसच्या घाटातून योवाशपुत्र गिदोन आणि त्याच्याबरोबरचे सैन्य परत फिरले.

Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres.
14
गिदोनने सुक्कोथमधील एका तरुणाला पकडले आणि त्याला काही प्रश्न विचारले. त्या तरुणाने सुक्कोथ नगरातील अधिकारी आणि वडीलधारी अशा सत्याहत्तर जणांची नावे गिदोनला लिहून दिली.

He caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders of it, seventy-seven men.
15
त्यानंतर गिदोन सुक्कोथला आला. नगरवासीयांना तो म्हणाला, “हे पाहा जेबह आणि सलमुन्ना. “तुझ्या दमलेल्या सैनिकांना आम्ही अन्न का द्यावे? तुम्ही अजून जेबह आणि सलमुन्ना यांना कुठे पकडले आहे? असे म्हणून माझी चेष्टा करत होतात नाही का?”

He came to the men of Succoth, and said, See Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom you did taunt me, saying, Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are weary?
16
नंतर गिदोनने शहरातील वडील धाऱ्यांना शिक्षा करण्यासाठी वाळवंटातील काटेरी झुडुपांनी फोडून काढले.

He took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
17
पनुएल मधील मनोऱ्याचीही त्याने मोडतोड केली. नंतर नगरात राहणाऱ्या लोकांना ठार केले.

He broke down the tower of Penuel, and killed the men of the city.
18
मग गिदोन, जेवह आणि सलमुन्ना यांना म्हणाला, “तुम्ही ताबोर डोंगरावर काही माणसे मारलीत. ती दिसायला कशी होती?”जेबह आणि सलमुन्ना म्हणाले, “ती तुझ्याप्रमाणेच चांगली राजबिंडी दिसत होती.”

Then said he to Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men were they whom you killed at Tabor? They answered, As you are, so were they; each one resembled the children of a king.
19
गिदोन म्हणाला, “ती माझी भावंडे होती. माझ्या आईची पोटची मुले. परमेश्वराशपथ, तुम्ही त्यांना मारले नसते तर मीही आता तुम्हाला मारले नसते”

He said, They were my brothers, the sons of my mother: as Yahweh lives, if you had saved them alive, I would not kill you.
20
मग गिदोन आपल्या येथेर या ज्येष्ठ पुत्राला म्हणाला, “या राजांना मारुन टाक” पण येथेर पोरसवदा असल्यामुळे घाबरला. त्याला त्यांच्यावर तलवार चालवायचा धीर होईना.

He said to Jether his firstborn, Up, and kill them. But the youth didn't draw his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth.
21
तेव्हा ते राजे गिदोनला म्हणाले, “चल पुढे हो आणि तूच आमच्यावर प्रहार कर. तु पुरुष आहेस. तूच हे कृत्य करु शकशील.” तेव्हा गिदोनने त्यांना ठार केले. त्यांच्या उंटांच्या गव्व्यातील चंद्रकोरीच्या आकाराचे दागिने त्याने काढून घेतले.

Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise you, and fall on us; for as the man is, so is his strength. Gideon arose, and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on their camels' necks.
22
मग इस्राएल लोक गिदोनला म्हणाले, “तू आम्हाला मिद्यानी लोकांच्या तावडीतून सोडवले आहेस तेव्हा आता तू आमच्यावर राज्य कर. तू तुझा मुलगा, तुझा नातू यांनीही आमच्यावर राज्य करावे.”

Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, Rule you over us, both you, and your son, and your son's son also; for you have saved us out of the hand of Midian.
23
पण गिदोन त्यांना म्हणाला, “खुद्द परमेश्वरच सत्ताधीश आहे. मी किंवा माझा मुलगा तुमच्यावर राज्य करणार नाही.”

Gideon said to them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: Yahweh shall rule over you.
24
इस्राएल लोकांनी ज्या अनेकांचा पराभव केला त्यात इश्माएलीही होते. हे इश्माएली पुरुष सोन्याची कुंडले घालत. गिदोन इश्माएलींना म्हणाला, “तुम्ही जी लूट मिळवली आहे त्यातून तुमच्यापैकी प्रत्येकाने मला अशी सोन्याची कुंडले करुन द्या.”

Gideon said to them, I would make a request of you, that you would give me every man the ear-rings of his spoil. (For they had golden ear-rings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

त्याला इस्राएल लोक आनंदाने कबूल झाले त्यांनी जमिनीवर एक अंगरखा पसरला. त्यावर प्रत्येकाने कुंडले टाकले.

They answered, We will willingly give them. They spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the ear-rings of his spoil.
26
नंतर त्या सर्वांचे वजन केले ते त्रेचाळीस पौंड भरले. इस्राएल लोकांनी गिदोनला दिलेल्या इतर भेटवस्तू वेगव्व्याच त्यांचे वजन यात धरलेले नाही. चंद्रकोरी, लोलक या आकारांची भूषणे मिद्यानी राजांच्या अंगावरील जांभळी वस्त्रे उंटांच्या गव्व्यातील साखव्व्या अशा विविध भेटीही त्यांनी दिल्या.

The weight of the golden ear-rings that he requested was one thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold, besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple clothing that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels' necks.

या सोन्यातून गिदोनने एफोद बनवला तो त्याने आपल्या अफ्रा या गावी ठेवला. सर्व इस्राएल लोक त्याची पूजा करु लागले. परमेश्वरावरची त्यांची निष्ठा ढळून ते एफोदच्या नादी लागले. गिदोन आणि त्याचे कुटुंब यांना हा एफोद सापव्व्याप्रमाणे ठरुन त्यांना पापाचरणासाठी प्रवृत्त करायला कारणीभूत झाला.

Gideon made an ephod of it, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel played the prostitute after it there; and it became a snare to Gideon, and to his house.

मिद्यान अशाप्रकारे इस्राएलांचा अंकित झाला. त्यांनी पुन्हा डोके वर काढले नाही. गिदोन जिवंत असेपर्यंत, पुढे चाळीस वर्षे त्या प्रदेशात शांतता नांदत होती.

So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and they lifted up their heads no more. The land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

योवाशपुत्र यरुब्बाल गिदोन आपल्या घरी परतला.

Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house.
30
त्याला सत्तर मुलगे होते. कारण त्याला अनेक बायका होत्या.

Gideon had seventy sons conceived from his body; for he had many wives.
31
शखेम शहरात त्याला एक उपपत्नी होती. तिच्यापासून त्याला अबीमलेख नावाचा मुलगा झाला.

His concubine who was in Shechem, she also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.
32
पुढे गिदोन बराच वृध्द होऊन मरण पावला. योवाशच्या कबरीत त्याला पुरण्यात आले. अबियेजर लोक राहतात त्या अफ्रा या गावात ही कबर आहे.

Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

गिदोनच्या मृत्यूनंतर लगेचच इस्राएल लोक पुन्हा बआलच्या मागे लागले त्यांनी बआल-बरीथ याला परमेश्वर मानले.

It happened, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and played the prostitute after the Baals, and made Baal Berith their god.

भोवतालच्या सर्व शत्रूपासून परमेश्वराने त्यांना वाचवले असले तरी देखील इस्राएल लोकांना आपल्या परमेश्वराचा विसर पडला.

The children of Israel didn't remember Yahweh their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side;
35
यरुब्बाल (गिदोन) याने त्यांच्यासाठी इतके केले तरीसुध्दा त्याच्या कुटुंबीयांशी इस्राएल लोक एकनिष्ठ राहिले नाहीत.
35
neither shown they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shown to Israel.
