नंतर पुन्हा इस्राएल लोकांनी परमेश्वराने निषिध्द म्हणून सांगितलेल्या गोष्टी केल्या. तेव्हा परमेश्वराने मिद्यानच्या लोकांच्या अंमलाखाली त्यांना सलग सात वर्षे ठेवले.

The children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh: and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

मिद्यानचे लोक बलशाली होतेच, पण इस्राएल लोकांशी क्रौर्यानेही वागत. तेव्हा इस्राएल लोकांनी लपून बसण्यासाठी डोंगरांमध्ये गुहा केल्या. गुहांमध्ये आणि दुर्गम अशा ठिकाणी ते अन्नधान्य ठेवत.

The hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

कारण मिद्यानी आणि पूर्वेकडील अमालेकी वारंवार त्यांच्या पिकांची नासधूस करत.

So it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;

ते या प्रदेशात तळ देत आणि इस्राएल लोकांनी पेरलेल्या पिकांचा नाश करत. थेट गज्जा पर्यंतच्या जमिनीतील उत्पन्नाची वाट लावली. त्यामुळे इस्राएल लोकांसाठी काहीच शिल्लक राहिले नाही. शेव्व्यामेंढ्या, गुरेढोरे, गाढवे देखील त्यांना राहिली नाहीत.

and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, until you come to Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor donkey.

आपला कुटुंब कबिला आणि जनावरे यांच्या सकट मिद्यानी लोकांनी येऊन तेथे तळ ठोकला. टोळधाडीसारखे ते घुसले. ते लोक व त्यांचे उंट यांची संख्या अक्षरश: अगाणित होती. त्यांनी या प्रदेशात येऊन त्याची नासधूस करायला सुरुवात केली.

For they came up with their cattle and their tents; they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it.

त्यामुळे इस्राएल लोक कंगाल झाले. त्यांनी मदतीसाठी परमेश्वराच्या नावाने आक्रोश करायला सुरुवात केली.

Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to Yahweh.

मिद्यानी लोकांच्या छळणुकीमुळे इस्राएल लोकांनी परमेश्वराचा धावा केला.

It happened, when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh because of Midian,

तेव्हा परमेश्वराने एका संदेष्ट्याला त्यांच्याकडे पाठवले. तो संदेष्टा इस्राएल लोकांना म्हणाला, “इस्राएलच्या परमेश्वर देवाचे म्हणणे असे आहे. “मिसरमध्ये तुम्ही गुलाम होता. तेथून मी तुम्हाला सोडवून बाहेर आणले.

that Yahweh sent a prophet to the children of Israel: and he said to them, Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;
9
मिसरच्या समर्थ लोकांपासून तुमची सुटका केली. नंतर कनानी लोकांनी तुम्हाला जाच केला. पुन्हा मी तुम्हाला वाचवले. त्यांना मी तो देश सोडायला लावला, आणि त्यांची भूमी तुम्हाला दिली.’

and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;
10
मग मी तुम्हाला सांगितले, “मी तुमचा देव परमेश्वर आहे. तुम्ही अमोरी लोकांच्या देशात राहाल पण त्यांच्या दैवतांची उपासना करु नका.’ पण तुम्ही माझे ऐकले नाही.”

and I said to you, I am Yahweh your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But you have not listened to my voice.

याच सुमाराला गिदोन नावाच्या माणसाकडे परमेश्वराचा दूत आला. आणि अफ्रा येथे योवाशच्या मालकीच्या ओक वृक्षाखाली बसला. योवाश अबियेजरच्या कुळातील होता. गिदोन योवाशचा मुलगा होता. गिदोन द्राक्षकुंडात गव्हाची झोडणी करत होता. परमेश्वराचा दूत गिदोनच्या शेजारी बसला. गिदोन मिद्यानांपासून गहू लपवून ठेवत होता.

The angel of Yahweh came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained to Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.
12
त्याला दर्शन देऊन परमेश्वराचा दूत म्हणाला, “हे वीरा, परमेश्वर तुझ्याबरोबर असो.”

The angel of Yahweh appeared to him, and said to him, Yahweh is with you, you mighty man of valor.
13
तेव्हा गिदोन म्हणाला, “परमेश्वर आमच्याबरोबर आहे तर मग आमच्यावर ही वेळ का यावी? आमच्या पूर्वजांसाठी त्याने मोठे चमत्कार केले असे ऐकले आहे. परमेश्वराने आमच्या पूर्वजांना मिसरमधून सोडवले असे ते सांगतात. पण परमेश्वराने तर आमची साथ सोडली आहे. मिद्यानी लोकांच्या तावडीत आम्ही सापडलो आहोत.”

Gideon said to him, Oh, my lord, if Yahweh is with us, why then has all this happened to us? and where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Yahweh bring us up from Egypt? but now Yahweh has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.
14
मग परमेश्वर गिदोनकडे वळला व म्हणाला, “तुझ्या शक्तीचा वापर कर मिद्यानी लोकांपासून इस्राएल लोकांची सोडवणूक कर. त्यांना वाचवण्यासाठी मी तुला पाठवत आहे.”

Yahweh looked at him, and said, Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian: have not I sent you?
15
पण गिदोन उत्तरादाखल म्हणाला, “मला क्षमा कर कारण मी इस्राएल लोकांना कसा काय वाचवू शकणार? मनश्शेच्या वंशात सगव्व्यात दुबळे माझे कूळ आहे आणि मी घरातला सर्वात धाकटा”

He said to him, Oh, Lord, with which shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.
16
तेव्हा परमेश्वर गिदेनला म्हणाला, “मी तुझ्या बरोबर आहे तू मिद्यानी लोकांचा पराभव करू शकशील आपण एकाच माणसाशी लढत आहोत असे तुला वाटेल.”

Yahweh said to him, Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.
17
गिदोन परमेश्वराला म्हणाला, “तुझी माझ्यावर कृपादृष्टी असली तर तू खरोखरच परमेश्वर असल्याची मला खात्री पटवून दे.
17
He said to him, If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you who talk with me.
18
आणि कृपा करून येथेच थांब. तुला अर्पण करायला मी भेट घेऊन येतो. तोपर्यंत येथून निघून जाऊ नको.”तेव्हा परमेश्वर म्हणाला, “तू परत येईपर्यंत मी थांबतो.

Please don't go away, until I come to you, and bring out my present, and lay it before you. He said, I will wait until you come again.
19
मग गिदोन गेला आणि त्याने एक करडू शिजवले. शिवाय, वीस पौंड पीठ घेऊन त्याचे बेखमीर भाकरी केल्या मग शिजवलेले मांस एका टोपलीत आणि त्याचा रस्सा एका पातेल्यात घेतला. मग बेखमीर भाकरींसह ते सर्व अन्न ओक वृक्षाखाली येऊन परमेश्वराला दिले.”

Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it.
20
परमेश्वराचा दूत तेव्हा गिदोनला म्हणाला, “ते मांस आणि बेखमीर भाकरी त्या खडकावर ठेव आणि त्यावर रस्सा ओत.” गिदोनने त्याप्रमाणे केले.

The angel of God said to him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth. He did so.
21
परमेश्वराचा दूताच्या हातात एक काठी होती. तिच्या टोकाने त्याने मांसाला व बेखमीर भाकरींना स्पर्श केला. तत्क्षणी खडकातून अग्नी प्रकट झाला. मांस व भाकरी जळून भस्मसात झाले आणि परमेश्वराचा दूत अदृश्य झाला.

Then the angel of Yahweh put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of Yahweh departed out of his sight.
22
तेव्हा गिदोनच्या लक्षात आले की इतका वेळ आपण परमेश्वराच्या दूताशी बोलत होतो. तेव्हा तो चित्कारला, “सर्व शक्तिमान परमेश्वरा! मी परमेश्वराच्या दूताला समोरासमोर पाहिले!”

Gideon saw that he was the angel of Yahweh; and Gideon said, Alas, Lord Yahweh! because I have seen the angel of Yahweh face to face.
23
तेव्हा परमेश्वर त्याला म्हणाला, “शांत हो! घाबरु नकोस. तू मरणार नाहीस.”
23
Yahweh said to him, Peace be to you; don't be afraid: you shall not die.
24
त्याठिकाणी गिदोनने परमेश्वराच्या उपासनेसाठी वेदी बांधली. तिचे नाव “परमेश्वर म्हणजे शांती” असे ठेवेले अफ्रा येथे ही वेदी अजूनही आहे. अफ्रा म्हणजे अबियेजेर कुटुंबाचे वसतिस्थान आहे.

Then Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh, and called it Yahweh-shalom: to this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
25
त्याच रात्री परमेश्वर गिदोनशी बोलला. तो म्हणाला, “तू तुझ्या वडीलांचा, सात वर्षाचा पूर्ण वाढलेला बैल घे. तुझ्या वडीलांनी बआल या खोट्या दैवताची वेदी बांधली आहे. तिच्या शेजारी लाकडी स्तंभही आहे. अशेरा या देवीच्या सन्मानार्थ तो आहे. बैलाकरवी तू तुझ्या वडीलांच्या मालकीची ती वेदी नष्ट कर आणि अशेरा स्तंभाची मोडतोड कर.

It happened the same night, that Yahweh said to him, Take your father's bull, even the second bull seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;
26
मग परमेश्वर देवासाठी योग्य अशा वेदीची उंचवट्यावर उभारणी कर. त्या वेदीवर या बैलाचा बळी देऊन त्याला जाळ. या यज्ञापर्णासाठी अशेरा स्तंभाच्या लाकडांचा वापर कर.”

and build an altar to Yahweh your God on the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down.
27
तेव्हा आपल्या दहा सेवकांच्या मदतीने गिदोनने परमेश्वराच्या सांगण्याप्रमाणे केले. त्याने ते केले खरे पण घरातील आणि नगरातील माणसे बघतील या भीतीने हे काम त्याने दिवसाढवव्व्या न करता रात्री केले.
27
Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as Yahweh had spoken to him: and it happened, because he feared his father's household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
28
सकाळी लोक उठून बघतात तर बआलची वेदी उध्वस्त झोलेली! वेदीच्या शेजारचा अशेरा स्तंभ मोडून पडलेला. गिदोनने बांधलेली वेदी आणि तिच्यावर अर्पण केलेल्या बैलालाही त्यांनी पाहिले.

When the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered on the altar that was built.
29
नगरातील लोक मग एकमेकांना विचारू लागले. “आपली वेदी कोणी पाडली? आपला अशेरा स्तंभ कोणी मोडला? या नवीन वेदीवर बैलाचे यज्ञार्पण कोणी केले?” असे अनेक प्रश्न ते आपले कुतूहल शमवायला विचारु लागले.कोणीतरी त्यांना सांगितले, “योवाशचा मुलगा गिदोन याने हे केले आहे.”

They said one to another, Who has done this thing? When they inquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.
30
तेव्हा नगरवासी योवाशकडे येऊन त्याला म्हणाले, “तुझ्या मुलाला बाहेर आण. त्याने बआल वेदीची आणि तिच्या शेजारच्या अशेरा स्तंभाची मोडतोड केलेली आहे. तेव्हा त्याला मृत्युदंड दिलाच पाहिजे.”
30
Then the men of the city said to Joash, Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.
31
तेव्हा भोवतालच्या जमावाला योवाश म्हणाला, “तुम्ही बआलाची बाजू घेणार का? त्याला तारणार का? जो बआलाची बाजू घेईल त्याला सकाळपर्यंत मृत्युदंड दिला जावा. बआल जर खरा देव असेल तर जेव्हा लोक वेदीची मोडतोड करायचा प्रयत्न करतील तेव्हा स्वत:चे रक्षण त्याने स्वत:च करुन दाखवावे.”

Joash said to all who stood against him, Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? he who will contend for him, let him be put to death while it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him contend for himself, because one has broken down his altar.
32
योवाश पुढे म्हणाला, “जर गिदोनने बआलच्या वेदीचा विध्वंस केला आहे तर बआलाच त्याच्याशी वाद करु द्या.” त्या दिवसापासून योवाशने गिदोनला नवे नाव दिले ते म्हणजे यरुब्बाल.

Therefore on that day he named him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.
33
मिद्यानी, अमालेकी आणि पूर्वेकडील इतर लोक एकत्र येऊन इस्राएल लोकांविरुध्द लढण्यास सज्ज झाले. यार्देन पलीकडे जाऊन त्यांनी एज्रीलच्या खोऱ्यात तळ दिला.

Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.
34
गिदोनच्या ठायी परमेश्वराच्या आत्म्याचा संचार झाला आणि गिदोन सामर्ध्यवान बनला. अबियेजर कुटुंबातील लोकांना आपल्या मागोमाग येण्याचे आवाहन करण्यासाठी त्याने रणशिंग फुंकले.

But the Spirit of Yahweh came on Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.
35
मनश्शेच्या वंशातील सर्व लोकांकडे त्याने दूत रवाना केले. दूतांनी त्या लोकांना शस्त्रास्त्रे घेऊन युध्दासाठी सज्ज राहायला सांगितले. आशेर, जबुलून आणि नफताली यांच्या कडेही गिदोनने आपल्या दूतांकरवी असाच निरोप पाठवला. तेव्हा तेही सर्व लोक गिदोनला येऊन मिळाले.

He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers to Asher, and to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.
36
मग गिदोन परमेश्वराला म्हणाला, “माझ्या हातून तू इस्राएल लोकांना वाचवणार आहेस, याची मला साक्ष पटव.

Gideon said to God, If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken,
37
मी आता खव्व्यात कातरलेली लोकर ठेवतो. सर्व जमीन कोरडी राहून फक्त लोकरीवर दव पडलेले आढळले तर मला समजेल की इस्राएल लोकांचा बचाव करण्यासाठी म्हटल्याप्रमाणे तू माझा उपयोग करणार आहेस.”
37
behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry on all the ground, then shall I know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken.
38
आणि नेमके तसेच घडले. गिदोन दुसऱ्या दिवशी भल्या पहाटे उठला आणि त्याने लोकर दाबून पाहिली तर त्यातून वाटीभर पाणी निघाले.

It was so; for he rose up early on the next day, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.
39
ते पाहून गिदोन परमेश्वराला म्हणाला, “माझ्यावर रागवू नको. मला आणखी एक गोष्ट विचारू दे. लोकरीद्वारे मला आणखी एकदा तुझी परीक्षा घ्यायची आहे. ह्या वेळी आजूबाजूची जमीन दवाने भिजलेली असताना लोकर मात्र कोरडी राहू दे.”
39
Gideon said to God, Don't let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: Please let me make a trial just this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew.
40
परमेश्वराने त्या रात्री तसेच करुन दाखवले. फक्त लोकर तेवढी कोरडी राहून भोवतालची जमीन दवाने ओली झाली होती.

God did so that night: for it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
