1मग परमेश्वर यहोशवाला म्हणाला,
1Yahweh spoke to Joshua, saying,
2इस्राएल लोकांना सांग “मोशे मार्फत मी माझी आज्ञा तुमच्यापर्यंत पोचवली. मोशेने तुम्हाला सुरक्षिततेसाठी खास नगरे उभारायला सांगितले.
2Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Assign you the cities of refuge, whereof I spoke to you by Moses,
3एखाद्याच्या हातून चुकून मनुष्यवध झाला, व त्याचा खुनाचा उद्देश नसेल तर तो माणूस या नगरात आश्रयाला जाऊ शकतो.
3that the manslayer who kills any person unwittingly and unawares may flee there: and they shall be to you for a refuge from the avenger of blood.
4“त्याने असे करावे. पळून जाऊन अशा नगराशी पोचल्यावर वेशीपाशी थांबावे. तेथे गावातील वडीलधाऱ्यांना झालेली हकीकत सांगावी. मग त्यांनी त्याला आत येऊ द्यावे. त्याला आपल्यात राहण्यासाठी जागा द्यावी
4He shall flee to one of those cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city; and they shall take him into the city to them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.
5पण त्याचा पाठलाग करत येणारा माणूसही तेथे येऊन पोचेल तर तेव्हा या वडीलधाऱ्यांनी त्याला थोपवून धरावे. आश्रयासाठी आलेल्या व्यक्तीला त्यांच्या ताब्यात देऊ नये. त्यांनी त्याला संरक्षण द्यावे. कारण ज्याला मृत्यू आला त्याला या व्यक्तीने जाणून बुजून मारलेले नाही. ती चुकून योगायोगाने घडलेली गोष्ट होती. रागाच्या भरात. मारायचे ठरवून त्याने काही केले नाही. त्यावेळी ते चुकून झाले, इतकेच.
5If the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver up the manslayer into his hand; because he struck his neighbor unawares, and didn't hate him before.

6He shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the manslayer return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city from whence he fled.

7They set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (the same is Hebron) in the hill-country of Judah.
8यार्देनच्या पूर्वेला रऊबेनींच्या प्रदेशापैकी वाळवंटातील यरीहो जवळचे बेसेर, गाद वंशाच्या विभागापैकी गिलादमधील रामोथ. मनश्शेच्या वंशातील बाशानमधील गोलान.
8Beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness in the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.
9इस्राएल लोक किंवा त्यांच्यात राहणारे परकीय यांच्यापैकी कोणाच्याही हातून चुकून मनुष्यवध झाल्यास त्याने पळून जाऊन आश्रय घ्यावा म्हणून ही नगरे नेमली. म्हणजे त्या व्यक्तीला संरक्षण मिळेल व तिचा पाठलाग करणाऱ्याच्या हातून ती व्यक्ती मारली जाणार नाही. मग त्या नगरातील न्यायसभेने निवाडा करावा.
9These were the appointed cities for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger who sojourns among them, that whoever kills any person unwittingly might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
