दीना ही लेआ व याकोब यांची मुलगी होती. एके दिवशी ती त्या देशाच्या स्त्रियांना पाहाण्यास बाहेर गेली.
1
Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
2
तेव्हा त्या देशाचा राजा हमोर याचा मुलगा शखेम याने दीनाला पाहिले आणि तो तिला बळजबरीने घेऊन गेला व तिच्या बरोबर निजून त्याने तिला भ्रष्ट केले.

Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. He took her, lay with her, and humbled her.

शखेमाचे दीनावर प्रेम जडले आणि तिने त्याच्याशी लग्न करावे म्हणून त्याने तिची मनधरणी केली.

His soul joined to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young lady, and spoke kindly to the young lady.

शखेमाने आपल्या बापास सांगितले, “कृपा करुन ही मुलगी मला मिळवून द्या; मला तिच्याशी लग्न करावयाचे आहे.”

Shechem spoke to his father, Hamor, saying, "Get me this young lady as a wife."
5
आपल्या मुलीशी त्या मुलाने भयंकर वाईट कर्म करुन तिला भ्रष्ट केले हे याकोबास समजले परंतु त्याची सर्व मुले गुरांढोरांबरोबर रानात होते म्हणून ते घरी येईपर्यंत त्याने या बाबतीत काहीही केले नाही.

Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter; and his sons were with his cattle in the field. Jacob held his peace until they came.

त्याच वेळी इकडे शखेमाचा बाप हमोर संबंधीत बोलणी करण्यासाठी याकोबाकडे गेला.

Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to talk with him.
7
नगरात जे काही घडले त्या विषयीची बातमी याकोबाच्या मुलांनी शेतात ऐकली तेव्हा त्यांचा राग भयंकर भडकला, इतका की ते रागाने वेडे झाले, कारण याकोबाच्या मुलीशी केलेल्या वाईट कर्मामुळे शखेमाने इस्त्राएलाची अब्रू घेतली होती; म्हणून मग ते सगळे भाऊ शेतातून घरी आले.

The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.

परंतु हमोर त्या भावांशी बोलला. तो म्हणाला, “माझा मुलगा शखेम दीनाशी लग्न करावयास फार आतुर झाला आहे.

Hamor talked with them, saying, "The soul of my son, Shechem, longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.
9
ह्या लग्नामुळे तुमच्या आमच्यामध्ये विशेष करार झाल्याचे दिसून येईन. मग त्यामुळे आमचे पुरुष तुमच्या स्त्रियांशी व तुमचे पुरुष आमच्या स्त्रियांशी लग्ने करु शकतील.

Make marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
10
तसेच त्यामुळे तुम्ही ह्याच देशात आमच्या बरोबर राहूं शकाल; येथील जमीनजुमला विकत घेऊन येथे वतन मिळविण्यास व येथेच व्यापार उदीम करण्यास तुम्हाला मोकळीक मिळेल.”

You shall dwell with us: and the land will be before you. Live and trade in it, and get possessions in it."

शखेम देखील याकोबाशी व दीनाच्या भावांशी बोलला; तो म्हणाला, “कृपा करुन माझा स्वीकार करा; तुम्ही जे काही करण्यास मला सांगाल ते मी जरुर करीन;

Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you will tell me I will give.
12
तुम्ही मला फक्त दीनाशी लग्न करण्यास परवानगी द्या मग तुम्हाला पाहिजे ते म्हणजे रीतीप्रमाणे बायको साठी द्यावयाचे ते किंवा तुम्ही जे काही मागाल ते मी जरुर देईन.”

Ask me a great amount for a dowry, and I will give whatever you ask of me, but give me the young lady as a wife."
13
याकोबाच्या मुलांनी शखेम व त्याचा बाप यांच्याशी खोटेपणाने वागावयाचे ठरवले. आपल्या बहिणीला भ्रष्ट केल्यामुळे ते भाऊ अद्याप संतापाने वेडे झाले होते.

The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit, and spoke, because he had defiled Dinah their sister,
14
तेव्हा ते भाऊ त्याला म्हणाले, “आम्ही तुला आमच्या बहिणीशी लग्न करु देणे शक्य नाही कारण अद्याप तुझी सुंता झालेली नाहीं. आमच्या बहिणीने तुझ्याशी लग्न करणे चुकीचे, अनीतीचे व कलंक लावणारे होईल;

and said to them, "We can't do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised; for that is a reproach to us.
15
पण तू जर एवढी एक गोष्ट करशील तर मग आम्ही तुला तिच्याशी लग्न करु देऊ: ह्या नगरातील सगळ्या पुरुषांची आमच्या प्रमाणे सुंता झाली पाहिजे;
15
Only on this condition will we consent to you. If you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised;
16
मग तुमचे पुरुष आमच्या स्त्रियांशी व आमचे पुरुष तुमच्या स्त्रियांशी लग्न करु शकतील आणि मग आपण सर्व एक राष्ट्र होऊ.

then will we give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
17
पण जर तुम्ही सुंता करावयास नकार द्याल तर मग मात्र आम्ही दीनाला घेऊन जाऊ.”
17
But if you will not listen to us, to be circumcised, then we will take our sister, and we will be gone."
18
ह्या करारामुळे हमोर व शखेम यांना फार आनंद झाला.

Their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem, Hamor's son.
19
दिनाच्या भावांनी जे सांगितले ते लवकर करण्यास शखेमाला तर फारच उत्साह व आनंद वाटला.शखेम त्यांच्या घराण्यात सर्वांत आदरणीय होता.

The young man didn't wait to do this thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter, and he was honored above all the house of his father.
20
हमोर व शखेम त्या नगरातील वेशीपाशी गेले व नगरातील लोकांशी बोलले. ते म्हणाले,

Hamor and Shechem, his son, came to the gate of their city, and talked with the men of their city, saying,
21
“ह्या इस्राएल लोकांची आपल्याशी मैत्रीचे संबंध ठेवावयाची खरोखरच इच्छा आहे. त्यांना आपणामध्ये आपल्या देशात राहू द्यावे. व व्यापार करु द्यावा. त्यांनी आमच्याशी शांततेने राहावे असे आपल्यालाही वाटते; आपल्या सर्वांना पुरेल एवढा आपला देश मोठा आहे. त्यांच्या स्त्रियांशी लग्ने करण्यास आपणास मोकळीक आहे आणि आपल्या स्त्रिया त्यांना लग्नात देण्यात आपल्यालाही आनंद आहे.

"These men are peaceful with us. Therefore let them live in the land and trade in it. For, behold, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
22
परंतु त्यांची एक अट पूर्ण करण्याचे आपण सर्वांनी कबूल केले पाहिजे; ती म्हणजे आपण सगळ्या पुरुषांनी या इस्राएल लोकांप्रमाणे सुंता करुन घेण्याचे मान्य केले पाहिजे.

Only on this condition will the men consent to us to dwell with us, to become one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.
23
जर हे आपण करु तर मग त्यांची शेरडेमेंढरे गुरेढोरे व संपत्ती आपल्याला मिळाल्याने आपण श्रीमंत होऊ; म्हणून आपण त्यांच्याशी असा करार केला पहिजे मग ते आपल्या बरोबर येथेच वस्ती करुन राहतील.”

Won't their cattle and their substance and all their animals be ours? Only let us give our consent to them, and they will dwell with us."
24
तेव्हा वेशीतून येणाऱ्या सर्वांनी हे ऐकले व हमोर आणि शखेम यांचे म्हणणे मान्य केले; आणि त्यावेळी तेथील सर्व पुरुषांनी सुंता करुन घेतली.

All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor, and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
25
तीन दिवसानंतर सुंता केलेले लोक जखमांच्या वेदनांनी बेजार झालेले असताना, याकोबाची दोन मुले शिमोन व लेवी यांना माहीत होते की ते लोक आता दुर्बल व कमकुवत असणार म्हणून मग ते नगरात गेले व त्यांनी तेथील सर्व पुरुषांना ठार मारले.

It happened on the third day, when they were sore, that two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, each took his sword, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males.

दीनाच्या त्या दोन भावांनी शिमोन आणि लेवी यांनी हमोर व त्याचा मुलगा शखेम यांनाही ठार मारले. नंतर दीनाला शखेमाच्या घरातून बाहेर काढून ते तिला घेऊन तेथून निघाले.

They killed Hamor and Shechem, his son, with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went away.
27
नंतर याकोबाची सर्व मुले नगरात गेली आणि त्यांनी तेथील सर्व चीज वस्तू लुटल्या, कारण त्यांच्या बहिणीला शखेमाने भ्रष्ट केल्याने त्यांच्या रागाचा पारा अद्याप खूपच चढलेला होता.

Jacob's sons came on the dead, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
28
तेव्हा त्यांनी त्या लोकांची शेरडेमेंढरे, गुरेढोरे, गाढवे इत्यादी सर्व जनावरे आणि घरातील व शेतातील सर्व वस्तू लुटल्या;

They took their flocks, their herds, their donkeys, that which was in the city, that which was in the field;
29
तसेच त्यांनी तेथील लोकांच्या मालकीची धनदौलत, मालमत्ता व सर्व चीजवस्तू आणि त्यांच्या बायका व मुलेबाळे देखील घेतली.

and all their wealth. They took captive all their little ones and their wives, and took as plunder everything that was in the house.
30
परंतु याकोब, शिमोन व लेवी यांना म्हणाला, “तुम्ही मला खूप त्रास देऊन संकटात टाकले आहे; आता या देशाचे रहिवासी कनानी व परिज्जी माझा द्वेष करतील व माझ्या विरुद्ध उठतील; आपण थोडकेच लोक आहोत. या देशातील सर्वलोक एकत्र होऊन आपल्या विरुद्ध जर लढावयास आले तर मग माझ्याजवळच्या आपल्या सर्वांचा माझ्याबरोबर नाश केला जाईल.”

Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house."
31
परंतु ते भाऊ म्हणाले, “आम्ही त्या लोकांना आमच्या बहिणीशी एखाद्या वेश्येप्रमाणे वागू द्यावे काय? नाही, कदापि नाही! त्या लोकांनी आमच्या बहिणीशी असे वागणे चुकीचे व अनीतीचे होते!”

They said, "Should he deal with our sister as with a prostitute?"
