त्याच काळात हेरोद राजा मंडळीतील काही विशिष्ट विश्वासणऱ्यांचा छळ करु लागला.

Now about that time, Herod the king stretched out his hands to oppress some of the assembly.
2
हेरोदाने याकोबाला तलवारीने मारण्याची आज्ञा केली, याकोब हा योहानाचा भाऊ होता.

He killed James, the brother of John, with the sword.

हेरोदाने पाहिले की, यहूदी लोकांना हे आवडले आहे.म्हणून त्याने पेत्रालासुद्धा अटक करण्याचे ठरविले. (हे वल्हांडण सणाच्या काळात घडले.)

When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This was during the days of unleavened bread.

हेरोदाने पेत्राला अटक करुन तुरुंगात टाकले. सोळा शिपाई पेत्राभोवती पहारा देत होते. हेरोदाला वल्हांडण होईपर्यंत थांबायचे होते. मग त्याने पेत्राला लोकांसमोर आणण्याची योजना केली.

When he had arrested him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of four soldiers each to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover.

म्हणून पेत्राला तुंगात ठेवण्यात आले. पण मंडळी सातत्याने पेत्रासाठी देवाकडे प्रार्थना करीत होती.

Peter therefore was kept in the prison, but constant prayer was made by the assembly to God for him.

पेत्र दोन शिपायांच्यामध्ये झोपला होता. त्याला साखळ्यांनी बांधले होते. तुरुंगाच्या दाराजवळ आणखी काही शिपाई पहारा देत होते. ती रात्रीची वेळ होती व हेरोदाने असा विचार केला की, दुसऱ्या दिवशी पेत्राला लोकांसमोर आणावे.

The same night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains. Guards in front of the door kept the prison.

अचानक देवाचा दूत तेथे उभा राहिला. तुरुंगाच्या खोलीत एकदम प्रकाश पडला. देवदूताने पेत्राच्या कुशीला स्पर्श करुन त्याला उठविले. देवदूत म्हणाला, “लवकर ऊठ!” तेव्हा पेत्राच्या हातातील साखळ्या गळून पडल्या.

And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side, and woke him up, saying, "Stand up quickly!" His chains fell off from his hands.

देवदूत पेत्राला म्हणाला, “कपडे घाल व तुझ्या वहाणा घाल.” मग पेत्राने कपडे घातले. मग देवदूत म्हणाला, “तुझा झगा अंगात घाल व माझ्यामागे ये!”

The angel said to him, "Get dressed and put on your sandals." He did so. He said to him, "Put on your cloak, and follow me."

मग देवदूत बाहेर पडला व पेत्र त्याच्या मागे चालला. पेत्राला कळत नव्हते की, देवदूत हे खरोखर काय करीत आहे. त्याला वाटले आपण दृष्टान्त पाहत आहोत.

And he went out and followed him. He didn't know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he saw a vision.

पहिल्या व दुसऱ्या फेऱ्यातील पहारेकऱ्यांना ओलांडून पेत्र व देवदूत लोखंडी फाटकाजवळ येऊन पोहोंचले. शहर आणि त्यांच्यामध्ये आता फक्त फाटकच होते. ते फाटक त्यांच्यासाठी आपोआप उघडले. पेत्र व देवदूत फाटकामधून बाहेर पडले. त्यांनी एक रस्ता पार केला आणि अचानक देवदूत पेत्राला सोडून निघून गेला.

When they were past the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened to them by itself. They went out, and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.

पेत्राला मग कळले की नेमके काय घडले. आणि तो म्हणाला, “आता मला समजले की प्रभूने त्याचा दूत माइयाकडे पाठविला. व त्याने मला हेरोदापासून सोडविले. यहूदी लोकांना वाटले की, माझा छळ होईल. पण प्रभूने मला या सर्वांतून सोडविले आहे.”

When Peter had come to himself, he said, "Now I truly know that the Lord has sent out his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from everything the Jewish people were expecting."

या गोष्टीची जाणीव झाल्यावर पेत्र मरीयेच्या घरी गेला. ती योहानाची आई होती. (योहानाला मार्क असेही म्हणत) पुष्कळ लोक त्या ठिकाणी जमले होते. ते सर्व प्रार्थना करीत होते.

Thinking about that, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.

पेत्राने बाहेरील बाजूने दार ठोठावले. तेव्हा रुदा नावाची दासी दार उघडण्यासाठी आली.

When Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a maid named Rhoda came to answer.
14
तिने पेत्राचा आवाज लगेच ओळखला आणि ती खूप आनंदित झाली. ती दार उघडण्याचेसुद्धा विसरुन गेली. ती आतमध्ये पळाली आणि लोकांना तिने सांगितले, “पेत्र दाराजवळ उभा आहे!”

When she recognized Peter's voice, she didn't open the gate for joy, but ran in, and reported that Peter was standing in front of the gate.

विश्वासणारे रुदाला म्हणाले, “तू बावचळलीस!” परंतु पेत्र दाराजवळ उभा आहे, असे रुदा परत परत अगदी कळकळीने सांगू लागली. म्हणून लोक म्हणाले, “तो पेत्राचा दूत असला पाहिज!”

They said to her, "You are crazy!" But she insisted that it was so. They said, "It is his angel."
16
पण पेत्र बाहेरुन दार सारखे ठोठावत होता. जेव्हा विश्वासणाऱ्यांनी दार उघडले, तेव्हा त्यांनी पेत्राला पाहिले. ते चकित झाले होते.

But Peter continued knocking. When they had opened, they saw him, and were amazed.
17
पेत्राने हाताने खुणावून शांत राहायला सांगितले, मग त्याने प्रभूने तुरुंगातून कसे आणले हे सविस्तर सांगितले. तो म्हणाला. “याकोब व इतर बांधवांना काय घडले ते सांगा.” मग पेत्र तेथून निघून दुसऱ्या ठिकाणी गेला.

But he, beckoning to them with his hand to be silent, declared to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. He said, "Tell these things to James, and to the brothers." Then he departed, and went to another place.

दुसऱ्या दिवाशी शिपाई फार हताश झाले होते. पेत्राचे काय झाले असावे याचा ते विचार करीत होते.

Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers about what had become of Peter.

हेरोदाने पेत्राला सगळीकडे शोधले पण तो त्याला शोधू शकला नाही. मग हेरोदाने पहारेकऱ्यांना प्रश्न विचारले व त्यांना मरणाची शिक्षा ठोठावली.नंतर हेरोद यहूदातून निघून गेला. तो कैसरीया शहरात गेला व तेथे काही काळ राहिला.

When Herod had sought for him, and didn't find him, he examined the guards, and commanded that they should be put to death. He went down from Judea to Caesarea, and stayed there.

हेरोद सोर व सिदोन नगरातील लोकांवर फार रागावला होता. ते लोक मिळून हेरोदाला भेटायला आले. ब्लस्तसला आपल्या बाजूला वळविण्यात ते यशस्वी झाले. ब्लस्तस हा राजाचा खाजगी सेवक होता. लोकांनी हेरोदाकडे शांततेची मागणी केली कारण त्यांचा देश अन्नधान्याच्या बाबतीत हेरोदाच्या देशावर अवलंबून होता.

Now Herod was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon. They came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus, the king's chamberlain, their friend, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king's country for food.

हेरोदाने त्यांना भेटण्यासाठी एक दिवस ठरविला. त्या दिवशी हेरोदाने आपला सुंदर दरबारी पोशाख घातला होता. तो सिंहासनावर बसून लोकांसमोर भाषण करु लागला.

On an appointed day, Herod dressed himself in royal clothing, sat on the throne, and gave a speech to them.

लोक मोठ्याने ओरडून म्हणाले, “ही तर देवाची वाणी आहे, मनुष्याची नव्हे!” हेरोदाने या स्तुतीचा स्वीकार केला.

The people shouted, "The voice of a god, and not of a man!"

आणि त्याने देवाला गौरव दिला नाही, म्हणून देवाच्या दूताने लगेच त्याला आजारी पाडले. किड्यांनी त्याला आतून खाल्ले आणि तो मेला.

Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he didn't give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and died.
24
देवाचा संदेश जास्तीत जास्त लोकांपर्येत पसरत होता. व लोकांना प्रेरित करीत होता. विश्वासणाऱ्यांचा गट दिवसेंदिवस मोठा होत होता.

But the word of God grew and multiplied.
25
बर्णबा व शौलाने त्यांचे यरुशलेम येथील काम संपविल्यानंतर ते अंत्युखियाला परत आले. त्यांनी मार्क योहान याला त्यांच्याबरोबर घेतले.

Barnabas and Saul returned to Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their service, also taking with them John whose surname was Mark.
