दावीदाने मग परमेश्वराला विचारले, “मी यहूदातील एखाद्या नगरात जाऊ का?”तेव्हा परमेश्वर म्हणाला, “हो खुशाल जा” दावीदाने विचारले, “कुठे जाऊ?” देवाने सांगितले, “हेब्रोनला जा.”

It happened after this, that David inquired of Yahweh, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? Yahweh said to him, Go up. David said, Where shall I go up? He said, To Hebron.

तेव्हा दावीद आपल्या दोन्ही बायकांसह हेब्रोनला गेला. (इज्रेलची अहीनवाम आणि कर्मेलच्या नाबालची विधवा अबीगईल या त्याच्या दोन बायका)

So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

आपल्या बरोबरच्या लोकांनाही दावीदाने त्यांच्या त्यांच्या परिवारासकट सोबत घेतले. हेब्रोन येथे आणि आसपासच्या गावांमध्ये या सर्वांनी वस्ती केली.

His men who were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they lived in the cities of Hebron.

यहूदा येथील लोक मग हेब्रोनला आले आणि त्यांनी दावीदाला अभिषेक करुन यहूदाचा राजा म्हणून घोषित केले. मग त्याला ते म्हणाले, “याबेश गिलादच्या लोकांनी शौलचा दफनविधी केला.”

The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, saying, The men of Jabesh Gilead were those who buried Saul.

तेव्हा दावीदाने याबेश गिलादच्या लोकांकडे दूत पाठवून संदेश दिला, “आपला स्वामी शौल याचा दफनविथी करुन तुम्ही जो दयाभाव दाखवला आहे त्याबद्दल परमेश्वर तुमचे भले करो.

David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, Blessed be you of Yahweh, that you have shown this kindness to your lord, even to Saul, and have buried him.
6
देव तुमच्याशी प्रामाणिक राहील, तुमच्यावर प्रेमाची पाखर घालील. मीही तुमच्याशी दयाळूपणाने वागेन. कारण तुम्ही हे काम केलेले आहे.

Now Yahweh show loving kindness and truth to you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because you have done this thing.
7
आता खंबीर राहा आणि धैर्याने वागा. आपला स्वामी शौल मरण पावला असला तरी यहूदा वंशातील लोकांनी मला राज्याभिषेक केला आहे.”

Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be you valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

नेरचा मुला अबनेर हा शौलचा सेनापती होता. इकडे तो शौलचा मुलगा इश-बोशेथ याला घेऊन महनाईम याठिकाणी आला.

Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
9
आणि त्याने ईश-बोशेथला गिलाद, अशेर, इज्रेल, एफ्राईम, बन्यामी आणि सर्व इस्राएलयांच्यावर राजा म्हणून नेमले.

and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

हा शौलाचा पुत्र ईश-बोशेथ इस्राएलवर राज्य करु लागला तेव्हा चाळीस वर्षाचा होता. त्याने दोन वर्षे कारभार पाहिला. पण यहूदा वंशाचा पाठिंबा दावीदाला होता.

Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
11
दावीद हेब्रोनमध्ये राज्य करत होता. त्याने यहूदांच्या घराण्यावर साडेसात वर्षे राज्य केले.

The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
12
नेरचा मुलगा अबनेर आणि शौलपुत्र ईश-बोशेथचे सेवक महनाईम सोडून गिबोन येथे आले.

Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

सरुवेचा मुलगा यवाब आणि दावीदचे सेवकही बाहेर पडून गिबोनला आले. गिबोनच्या तलावाशी या दोन गटांची गाठ पडली. तलावाच्या दोन बाजूला दोन्ही सैन्ये उतरली.

Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
14
अबनेर यवाबाला म्हणाला, “आपल्यातील तरुण सैनिकांनी उठून समोरासमोर येऊन दोन हात करावे.”यवाब म्हणाला, “ठीक आहे होऊन जाऊ दे.”

Abner said to Joab, Please let the young men arise and play before us. Joab said, Let them arise.
15
तेव्हा दोन्ही बाजूचे तरुण सैनिक उठले. त्यांनी आपापली संख्या पाहिली. शौलपुत्र ईश-बोशेथ याच्या बाजूने झुंज द्यायला त्यांनी बन्यामीनच्या वंशातील बाराजण निवडले आणि दावीदाच्या सैन्यातील बाराजणांना घेतले.

Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
16
प्रत्येकाने आपल्या प्रतिस्पर्ध्याचे मस्तक धरुन त्याच्या कुशीत तलवार खुपसली. तेव्हा सर्व एकदम पडले. म्हणून त्या जागेचे नाव हेलकथहसूरीम म्हणजेच “धारदार सुऱ्यांचे क्षेत्र” असे पडले हे स्थळ गिबोनमध्ये आहे.

They caught everyone his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: therefore that place was called Helkath Hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

त्या दिवशी तेथे तुंबळ युध्द झाले. दावीदाच्या सैन्याने त्या दिवशी अबनेर आणि इस्राएल लोक यांचा पराभव केला.

The battle was very severe that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
18
यवाब, अबीशय आणि असाएल हे सरूवेचे तीन पुत्र. त्यापैकी असाएल हा वेगवान धावपटू होता. अगदी रानातल्या हरणासारखा चपळ होता.

The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild gazelle.
19
त्याने अबनेरचा पाठलाग सुरु केला. अबनेरचा पाठलाग करताना त्याने डावीकडे अथवा उजवीकडे वळून सुद्धा पाहिले नाही.

Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he didn't turn to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.

अबनेर ने मागे वळून विचारले, “तू असाएल ना?”
20
Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Is it you, Asahel? He answered, It is I.
21
(असाएलला इजा होऊ नये असे अबनेरला वाटत होते.) म्हणून तो असाएलला म्हणाला, “माझा पाठलाग थांबव. एखाद्या तरुण सैनिकाला धर. त्याचे चिलखत स्वत:साठी घे.” पण असाएलने त्याचे न ऐकता अबनेरचा पाठलाग चालूच ठेवला.

Abner said to him, Turn you aside to your right hand or to your left, and lay you hold on one of the young men, and take you his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.
22
पुन्हा अबनेर त्याला म्हणाला, “हा पाठलाग थांबव नाहीतर मला तुला मारावे लागेल आणि तसे झाले तर तुझा भाऊ यवाब याला मी तोंड दाखवू शकणार नाही.”

Abner said again to Asahel, Turn you aside from following me: why should I strike you to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab your brother?

तरीही असाएल ऐकेना. तेव्हा अबनेरने आपल्या भाल्याचे मागचे टोक असाएलच्या पोटात खुपसले. भाला सरळ त्याच्या पोटात घुसून पाठीतून निघाला. असाएलला तिथे तात्काळ मृत्यू आला.असाएलचा मृतदेह तिथेच जमिनीवर पडलेला होता. लोकांनी ते पाहिले आणि ते तिथेच थांबले.

However he refused to turn aside: therefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear struck him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it happened, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
24
पण यवाब आणि अबीशय यांनी अबनेरचा पाठलाग चालू ठेवला. ते अम्मा टेकडीपाशी पोहोंचले तेव्हा सूर्य नुकताच मावळत होता. (ही टेकडी गिबोन वाळवंटाच्या रस्त्यावरील गिहा गावासमोर आहे.)

But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

बन्यामीनच्या घराण्यातील लोक अबनेरकडे आले आणि या डोंगराच्या शिखरावर उभे राहिले.

The children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill.
26
तेव्हा यवाबाला हाक मारून अबनेरने त्याला विचारले, “आपापसातील या प्राणघातक लढाया अशाच चालू ठेवायच्या आहेत का? याचे पर्यवसान दु:खात होणार आहे हे तू जाणतोसच. आपल्याच भाऊबंदांचा पाठलाग थांबवायला तुझ्या लोकांना सांग.”

Then Abner called to Joab, and said, "Shall the sword devour forever? Don't you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long shall it be then, before you bid the people return from following their brothers?"
27
तेव्हा यवाब म्हणाला, “तू हे सुचवलेस ते चांगले झाले नाहीतर, देवाच्या जीविताची शपथ, हे लोक सकाळच्या वेळी आपल्याच बांधवांचा पाठलाग करत राहिले असते.”

Joab said, As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed everyone his brother.
28
आणि यवाबाने रणशिंग फुंकले. त्याच्या बाजूच्या लोकांनी इस्राएल लोकांचा पाठलाग थांबवला. एवढेच नव्हे तर त्यांनी पुढे इस्राएलांशी युध्दही केले नाही.

So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
29
अबनेर आणि त्याच्या बरोबरची माणसे यांनी मग रातोरात यार्देन खोऱ्यातून कूच केले. नदी पार करुन महनाइमला पोचेपर्यंत ते वाटचाल करत होते.

Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.
30
यवाबाने अबनेरचा पाठलाग थांबवला आणि तो परतला. आपल्या लोकांना त्याने एकत्र केले तेव्हा असाएल धरुन दावीदाच्या सेवकांपैकी एकोणीस जण बेपत्ता असल्याचे त्याला आढळून आले.

Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men and Asahel.
31
पण दावीदाच्या लोकांनी बन्यामीनच्या कुळातील अबनेरची तीनशे साठ माणसे मारली होती.
31
But the servants of David had struck of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, so that three hundred sixty men died.
32
दावीदाच्या लोकांनी असाएलचे दफन बेथलहेम येथे त्याच्या वडीलांच्या थडग्यातच केले.यवाब आणि त्याची माणसे रात्रभर प्रवास करुन उजाडता उजाडता हेब्रोन येथे पोचली.

They took up Asahel, and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was in Bethlehem. Joab and his men went all night, and the day broke on them at Hebron.
