1आता शौलला राजा होऊन वर्ष झाले होते. इस्राएलवरील त्याच्या सत्तेला दोन वर्षे झाल्यावर
1Saul was forty years old when he began to reign; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,
2त्याने इस्राएलमधून तीन हजार माणसे निवडली. त्यापैकी दोन हजार मिखमाश येथे त्याच्या बरोबर बेथेलच्या डोंगराळ प्रदेशात राहिली. हजार जण योनाथान बरोबर बन्यामीनमधील गिबा येथे राहिले. सैन्यातील इतर सर्वांना त्याने घरोघरी पाठवले.
2Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel, whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in the Mount of Bethel, and one thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
3गिबा येथील छावणीतील पलिष्ट्यांच्या योनाथानने पराभव केला. ते पलिष्ट्यांच्या सेनापतीच्या कानावर गेले. ते म्हणाले, “इब्री लोकांनी बंड केले आहे.”शौल म्हणाला, “नेमके काय घडले ते इब्रींना ऐकू द्या” आणि त्याने आपल्या लोकांना इस्राएलभर रणशिंग फुंकून ही बातमी सांगायला सांगितली.
3Jonathan struck the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba: and the Philistines heard of it. Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
4सर्व इस्राएसांच्या हे कानावर आले. त्यांना वाटले, “शौलने पलिष्ट्यांच्या नेत्याला मारले. तेव्हा पलिष्ट्यांना आता इस्राएलांबद्दल द्वेष वाटतो.”सर्व इस्राएलांना गिलगाल येथे शौलजवळ एकत्र जमायचा निरोप गेला.
4All Israel heard say that Saul had struck the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel was had in abomination with the Philistines. The people were gathered together after Saul to Gilgal.
5इस्राएलांशी सामना करायला पलिष्टे ही सिध्द झाले. पलिष्ट्यांचा सेनासागर किनाऱ्यावर जेवढे वाळूचे कण असतील तेवढे सैनिक त्यांच्याकडे होते. सेनासागर विशाल होता. त्यांच्याकडे तीन हजार रथआणि सहा हजारांचे घोडदळ होते. त्यांनी बेथ-ओवनच्या पूर्वेला मिखमाश येथे तळ दिला.
5The Philistines assembled themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea-shore in multitude: and they came up, and encamped in Michmash, eastward of Beth Aven.
6आता आपण संकटात सापडले आहोत, पुरते पलिष्ट्यांच्या कचाट्यांत सापडलो आहोत हे इस्राएलांच्या लक्षात आले. ते गुहांमध्ये आणि खडकांच्या कपारीत लपून बसले. विवर, विहिरी यात त्यांनी आश्रय घेतला.
6When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in coverts, and in pits.
7काही तर यार्देन नदी पलीकडे गाद, गिलाद या प्रांतात पळाले. शौल या वेळी गिलगाल येथेच होता. त्याच्या सैन्याचा भीतीने थरकाप उडाला होता.
7Now some of the Hebrews had gone over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead; but as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
8शमुवेलने गिलगाल येथे भेटतो असे शौलाला सांगितले होते. त्याप्रमाणे शौलने सात दिवस त्याची वाट पाहिली. पण शमुवेल पोचला नाही. तेव्हा सैन्य शौलला सोडून जायला लागले.
8He stayed seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel didn't come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
9तेव्हा शौल म्हणाला, “होमार्पणे आणि शांत्यर्पणे आणून द्या.” ती आणल्यावर शौलने यज्ञार्पणे केली.
9Saul said, Bring here the burnt offering to me, and the peace-offerings. He offered the burnt offering.
10त्याचे हे आटोपते आहे तोच शमुवेल तेथे पोचला. शौल त्याला भेटायला पुढे झाला.
10It came to pass that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.
11शमुवेलने विचारले, “तू काय केलेस?” शौल म्हणाला, “माझे सैन्य पांगले. तुम्हीही दिलेल्या वेळेत आला नाहीत. पलिष्ट्यांची सेना मिखमाश येथे जमली.
11Samuel said, What have you done? Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you didn't come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash;
12तेव्हा मी विचार केला, पलिष्टी इथे गिलगाल मध्ये येऊन माझ्यावर हल्ला करतील आणि मी तर अजून परमेश्वराला मदतीचे आवाहनही केले नाही. तेव्हा मी हे होमार्पण करण्याचे घाडस केले आहे.”
12therefore said I, Now will the Philistines come down on me to Gilgal, and I haven't entreated the favor of Yahweh: I forced myself therefore, and offered the burnt offering.
13शमुवेल म्हणाला, “तुझा हा मूर्खपणा आहे. परमेश्वर तुझा देव याची आज्ञा तू पाळली नाहीस. त्याचे म्हणणे ऐकले असतेस तर इस्राएलवर तुझ्या वंशाचे राज्य निरंतर राहिले असते.
13Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you: for now would Yahweh have established your kingdom on Israel forever.
14पण आता तुझे राज्य सतत राहाणार नाही. परमेश्वराला त्याचा शब्द मानणारा माणूस हवा आहे आणि तसा तो मिळाला आहे. तो आता नवा नेता बनेल. तू परमेश्वराची अवज्ञा केलीस म्हणून त्याने नवीन अधिपती नेमला आहे.” आणि शमुवेल गिलगाल सोडून चालता झाला.
14But now your kingdom shall not continue: Yahweh has sought him a man after his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept that which Yahweh commanded you.
15शौल आपल्या उर्वरित सैन्यासह गिलगाल सोडून बन्यामीन मधील गिबा येथे गेला. त्याने बरोबरची माणसे मोजली. ती जवळपास सहाशे भरली.
15Samuel arose, and got him up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.
16आपला मुलगा योनाथान आणि हे सैन्य यांसह तो गिबा येथे राहिला. मिखमाश येथे पलिष्ट्यांचा तळ होता.
16Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who were present with them, abode in Geba of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.
17त्यांनी त्या भागातील इस्राएल रहिवाश्यांना धडा शिकवायचे ठरवले आणि निवडक सैन्याने हल्ला सुरु केला. पलिष्ट्यांच्या सैन्याच्या तीन तुकडया होत्या. पहिली तुकडी उत्तरेला अफ्राच्या वाटेने शुवाल जवळ गेली.
17The spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned to the way that leads to Ophrah, to the land of Shual;
18दुसरी बेथ-होरोनच्या वाटेने आग्न्नेय दिशेला गेली आणि तिसरी टोळी वाळवंटाच्या दिशेला असलेल्या सबोईम दरी कडील वाटेने गेली.
18and another company turned the way to Beth Horon; and another company turned the way of the border that looks down on the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19इस्राएलमध्ये लोहार नव्हते. त्यामुळे त्यांना लोखंडाच्या वस्तू करता येत नसत. पलिष्ट्यांनीही त्यांना ही विद्या शिकवली नाही कारण ते लोखंडी भाले, तलवारी करतील ही त्यांना धास्ती होती.
19Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:
20पलिष्टी फक्त त्यांना धार लावून देत असत. तेव्हा इस्राएलांना फाळ, कुदळी, कुऱ्हाडी यांना धार लावायची असेल तेव्हा ते पलिष्ट्यांकडे जात.
20but all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his plowshare, mattock, axe, and sickle;
21फाळ आणि कुदळीला धार लावण्यासाठी पलिष्टी लोहार 1/3 औंस रुपे घेत तर कुऱ्हाडी, दाताळे, अरी, पराण्या यांना धार लावायचा आकार 1/6 औंस रुपे एवढा होता.
21yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the plowshares, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to set the goads.
22अशाप्रकारे युद्धाच्या दिवशी शौलच्या सैन्यातील एकाच्याही जवळ तलवार किंवा भाला नव्हता. शौल आणि त्याचा मुलगा योनाथान यांच्याजवळ तेवढी लोखंडी हत्यारे होती.
22So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people who were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.
23पलिष्टी सैन्याच्या एका तुकडीने मिखमाशची खिंड रोखून धरली होती.
23The garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.
