1દાઉદની અને શાઉલની વાતચીત પૂરી થઈ, શાઉલના પુત્ર યોનાથાન દાઉદનો મિત્ર બન્યો, અને તેને પોતાના પ્રાણની જેમ પ્રેમ કરવા લાગ્યો.
1It happened, when he had made an end of speaking to Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
2તે દિવસથી શાઉલે દાઉદને પોતાની સાથે જ રાખી લીધો અને તેને પાછો ઘેર જવા દીધો નહિ.
2Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.
3યોનાથાન અને દાઉદ બંને વચ્ચે પ્રાણસમાંન પ્રેમ હોવાથી કાયમ મૈત્રીભાવ રાખવાની સંધિ શપથપૂર્વક કરી.
3Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
4અને યોનાથાને પોતાનો ઝભ્ભો કાઢીને દાઉદને આપી દીધો. ઉપરાંત, પોતાનું બખ્તર, તરવાર, ધનુષ્ય અને કમરપટો પણ મિત્રતાના પ્રતીક તરીકે આપ્યા. હવે રાજા શાઉલ દાઉદને યરૂશાલેમમાં જ રાખતો હતો અને તેને ઘેર જવા દેતો નહિ.
4Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him, and gave it to David, and his clothing, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his sash.
5શાઉલે દાઉદને ઘણા યુદ્ધો લડવા મોકલ્યો, દાઉદે ખૂબ સફળતા મેળવી, તેથી શાઉલે તેને સૈન્યમાં ઊંચી પદવી આપી, તેને યોદ્ધાઓની દેખરેખનું કામ આપ્યું. શાઉલના માંણસોને અને બધાં લોકોને પણ આ ગમ્યું.
5David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and it was good in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's servants.
6દાઉદે ગોલ્યાથને માંર્યા પછી વિજયી ઇસ્રાએલી સૈન્ય પાછું ફરતું હતું ત્યારે રસ્તે આવતાં ઇસ્રાએલનાં બધાંજ શહેરોની સ્ત્રીઓ રાજા શાઉલને વધાવવા ખંજરી અને વીણા વગાડતી વગાડતી નાચતી અને આનંદનાં ગીતો ગાતી બહાર આવતી.
6It happened as they came, when David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tambourines, with joy, and with instruments of music.
7તેઓ ઉત્સવનાં ઉલ્લાસમાં એવું ગીત ગાતી હતી કે,“શાઉલે હજારોને સંહાર્યા છે પણ દાઉદે તો લાખોને.”
7The women sang one to another as they played, and said, Saul has slain his thousands, David his ten thousands.
8શાઉલને આ ગમ્યું નહિ, તેને ગુસ્સો ચડયો, તે બોલ્યો, “દાઉદને એ લોકો લાખોનું શ્રેય આપે છે, જયારે મને માંત્ર હજારોનું જ! હવે તો એને રાજા થવું જ બાકી છે.”
8Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
9તે દિવસથી શાઉલ રાજા દાઉદને ઇર્ષ્યાની દૃષ્ટિથી જોવા લાગ્યો.
9Saul eyed David from that day and forward.
10અને બીજે દિવસે દેવ તરફથી એક દુષ્ટાત્માંએ શાઉલને વશમાં કર્યો, તેણે શાઉલનો કબજો લીધો અને તે ગાંડા જેવો થઈ ગયો, અગાઉની જેમ દાઉદ વીણા વગાડીને તેને શાંત પાડવા લાગ્યો, પણ શાઉલ તો પોતાના હાથમાં ભાલો ફેરવતો હતો.
10It happened on the next day, that an evil spirit from God came mightily on Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand;
11શાઉલે અચાનક દાઉદને ભીંત સાથે જડી દેવાના ઇરાદાથી બે વખત તેની તરફ ભાલો ફેંકયો. પરંતુ દાઉદે બે વાર બાજુ પર ખસી જઈને ઘા ચુકાવ્યો.
11and Saul cast the spear; for he said, I will strike David even to the wall. David avoided out of his presence twice.
12શાઉલ ત્યારથી દાઉદથી ડરવા લાગ્યો, કારણ, યહોવા શાઉલ પાસેથી જતા રહ્યા હતા અને દાઉદની સાથે હતા.
12Saul was afraid of David, because Yahweh was with him, and was departed from Saul.
13તેથી શાઉલે તેને પોતાની હજૂરમાંથી ખસેડીને તેને પોતાના સૈન્યમાં સહસ્ત્રાધિપતિ તરીકે નીમ્યો. પછી તે લોકોને યુદ્ધમાં દોરી જતો હતો અને પાછા લાવતો હતો.
13Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
14દાઉદ બધાં જ કામોમાં સફળ થતો હતો કારણ કે યહોવા તેની સાથેે હતા.
14David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and Yahweh was with him.
15દાઉદની સફળતા જોઈને શાઉલ તેનાથી વધારે ડરવા લાગ્યો,
15When Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he stood in awe of him.
16પરંતુ ઇસ્રાએલના અને યહૂદાના બધા લોકો તેના ઉપર પ્રેમ રાખતા હતા, કારણ તે યુદ્ધમાં ટૂકડીઓને દોરવતો હતો.
16But all Israel and Judah loved David; for he went out and came in before them.
17પછી એક દિવસ શાઉલે દાઉદને કહ્યું, “આ માંરી મોટી પુત્રી મેરાબ છે એને હું તારી સાથે પરણાવું. જો તુંં યુદ્ધમાં બહાદુરી અને વફાદારીપૂર્વક માંરી સેવા બજાવતો હોય અને યહોવાની લડાઈઓ લડીને પોતાને સાચા સૈનિક તરીકે સાબિત કરી શકતો હોય,” શાઉલના મનમાં એમ કે, આ રીતે એ પલિસ્તીઓને હાથે માંર્યો જશે અને માંરે તેને માંરવો પડશે નહિ.
17Saul said to David, Behold, my elder daughter Merab, her will I give you as wife: only be valiant for me, and fight Yahweh's battles. For Saul said, Don't let my hand be on him, but let the hand of the Philistines be on him.
18દાઉદે જવાબ આપ્યો, “હું એવો તે કોણ છું ને માંરા પરિવારનું ઇસ્રાએલમાં એવું તે કયું સ્થાન છે કે હું રાજાનો જમાંઈ થાઉં?”
18David said to Saul, Who am I, and what is my life, or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?
19પણ જયારે દાઉદ સાથે શાઉલની પુત્રી મેરાબનો પરણાવવાનો સમય આવ્યો ત્યારે શાઉલેે મહોલાથના આદ્રીએલ સાથે તેને પરણાવી દીધી.
19But it happened at the time when Merab, Saul's daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given to Adriel the Meholathite as wife.
20ત્યાર બાદ શાઉલની બીજી પુત્રી મીખાલ દાઉદનાં પ્રેમમાં પડી અને શાઉલને જયારે એની જાણ થઈ ત્યારે તે બહુ રાજી થયો.
20Michal, Saul's daughter, loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
21તેણે વિચાર્યું, “હું મીખાલને દાઉદ સાથે પરણાવીશ. તે દાઉદને ફસાવશે અને પછી તે પલિસ્તીઓને હાથે મૃત્યુ પામશે.” આથી શાઉલે બીજી વાર દાઉદને કહ્યું, “તારે માંરા જમાંઈ થવાનું છે.”
21Saul said, I will give her to him, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Therefore Saul said to David, You shall this day be my son-in-law a second time.
22શાઉલે પોતાના દરબારીઓને કહ્યું, “તમે ખાનગી રીતે દાઉદને એમ કહો કે, ‘રાજા તારા ઉપર ઘણા પ્રસન્ન છે અને રાજાના બધા અમલદારો પણ તારા પર પ્રેમભાવ રાખે છે. રાજાના જમાંઈ થવા માંટે તારા માંટે આ ખરો સમય છે.”‘
22Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you: now therefore be the king's son-in-law.
23શાઉલના માંણસોએ દાઉદના કાને આ વાત નાખી, ત્યારે દાઉદે કહ્યું, “શું તમે રાજાના જમાંઈ થવાનું એટલું સહેલું માંનો છો કે, માંરા જેવો એક ગરીબ અને સામાંન્ય માંણસ પણ રાજાનો જમાંઈ થઈ શકે?”
23Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. David said, Seems it to you a light thing to be the king's son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?
24શાઉલના અમલદારોએ જયારે દાઉદના શબ્દો તેમને કહ્યાં ત્યારે શાઉલે જણાવ્યું,
24The servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spoke David.
25“તેણે તેમને કહ્યું કે, દાઉદને કહો કે, ‘રાજાને તારી પાસેથી દહેજમાં ફકત સો પલિસ્તીઓની ઇન્દ્રીયની ચામડી જ જોઈએ છે તેને તેના દુશ્મનો ઉપર વેર વાળવું છે.”‘ શાઉલના મનમાં એવું હતું કે, આ રીતે દાઉદ પલિસ્તીને હાથે માંર્યો જશે.
25Saul said, Thus shall you tell David, The king desires no dowry except one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
26દાઉદના અમલદારોએ શાઉલનાં શબ્દો તેને કહ્યાં. દાઉદે આ પ્રસ્તાવ સહર્ષ સ્વીકારી લીધો. અને તરત કામ ઉપાડ્યું.
26When his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son-in-law. The days were not expired;
27દાઉદે અને તેના માંણસોએ જઈને બ સો પલિસ્તીઓને માંરી નાખ્યા; દાઉદે તેમની ઇન્દ્રિયની ચામડી લાવીને રાજાને આપી; જેથી પોતે રાજાનો જમાંઈ થઈ શકે. આથી શાઉલે પોતાની પુત્રી મીખાલ દાઉદને પરણાવી.
27and David arose and went, he and his men, and killed of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might be the king's son-in-law. Saul gave him Michal his daughter as wife.
28શાઉલે જોયું કે, યહોવા દાઉદની સાથે છે, વળી તેની પુત્રી મીખાલ પણ તેના પ્રેમમાં પડી છે,
28Saul saw and knew that Yahweh was with David; and Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him.
29આથી તે દાઉદથી વધુને વધુ ડરવા લાગ્યો અને તેનો જીવનભર દુશ્મન બની ગયો.
29Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul was David's enemy continually.
30જયારે પલિસ્તીઓનું સૈન્ય હુમલો કરતું, ત્યારે દરેક વખતે શાઉલના બીજા અમલદારો કરતા દાઉદને વધારે સફળતા મળતી અને આથી દાઉદનું નામ સમગ્ર દેશમાં ખૂબ જ ખ્યાતિ પામ્યું.
30Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it happened, as often as they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
