তিবিরিয় কৈসরের রাজত্বের পঞ্চদশ বৎসরে যখন পন্তীয় পীলাত যিহূদিয়ার অধ্যক্ষ, হেরোদ গালীলের রাজা, তাঁহার ভ্রাতা ফিলিপ যিতূরিয়া ও ত্রাখোনীতিয়া প্রদেশের রাজা, এবং লুষাণিয় অবিলীনীর রাজা,

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

তখন হানন ও কায়াফার মহাযাজকত্ব কালে ঈশ্বরের বাণী প্রান্তরে সখরিয়ের পুত্র যোহনের নিকটে উপস্থিত হইল।

in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.

তাহাতে তিনি যর্দ্দনের নিকটবর্ত্তী সমস্ত দেশে আসিয়া পাপমোচনের জন্য মনপরিবর্ত্তনের বাপ্তিস্ম প্রচার করিতে লাগিলেন;

He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins.

যেমন যিশাইয় ভাববাদীর বাক্য গ্রন্থে লিখিত আছে, “প্রান্তরে এক জনের রব, সে ঘোষণা করিতেছে, তোমরা প্রভুর পথ প্রস্তুত কর, তাঁহার রাজপথ সকল সরল কর।

As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.

প্রত্যেক উপত্যকা পরিপূরিত হইবে, প্রত্যেক পর্ব্বত ও উপর্ব্বত নিম্ন করা যাইবে, যাহা যাহা বক্র, সে সকল সরল করা যাইবে, যাহা যাহা অসমান, সে সকল সমান করা যাইবে,

Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be brought low. The crooked will become straight, And the rough ways smooth.

এবং সমস্ত মর্ত্ত্য ঈশ্বরের পরিত্রাণ দেখিবে।”

All flesh will see God's salvation.'"

অতএব যে সকল লোক তাঁহার দ্বারা বাপ্তাইজিত হইতে বাহির হইয়া আসিল, তিনি তাহাদিগকে কহিলেন, হে সর্পের বংশেরা, আগামী কোপ হইতে পলায়ন করিতে তোমাদিগকে কে চেতনা দিল?

He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, "You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

অতএব মনপরিবর্ত্তনের উপযুক্ত ফলে ফলবান্ হও; এবং মনে মনে বলিতে আরম্ভ করিও না যে, অব্রাহাম আমাদের পিতা; কেননা আমি তোমাদিগকে বলিতেছি, ঈশ্বর এই সকল পাথর হইতে অব্রাহামের জন্য সন্তান উৎপন্ন করিতে পারেন

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and don't begin to say among yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father;' for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones!

আর এখনই বৃক্ষ সকলের মূলে কুঠার লাগান আছে; অতএব যে কোন গাছে উত্তম ফল ধরে না, তাহা কাটিয়া অগ্নিতে ফেলিয়া দেওয়া যায়।

Even now the axe also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn't bring forth good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire."

তখন লোকেরা তাঁহাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করিল, তবে আমাদের কি করিতে হইবে?

The multitudes asked him, "What then must we do?"
11
তিনি উত্তর করিয়া তাহাদিগকে কহিলেন, যাহার দুইটী আঙ্রাখা আছে, সে, যাহার নাই, তাহাকে একটী দিউক; আর যাহার কাছে খাদ্য দ্রব্য আছে, সেও তদ্রূপ করুক।

He answered them, "He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise."

আর করগ্রাহীরাও বাপ্তাইজিত হইতে আসিল, এবং তাঁহাকে কহিল, গুরো, আমাদের কি করিতে হইবে?

Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what must we do?"
13
তিনি তাহাদিগকে কহিলেন, তোমাদের জন্য যাহা নিরূপিত, তাহার অধিক আদায় করিও না।
13
He said to them, "Collect no more than that which is appointed to you."
14
আর সৈনিকেরাও তাঁহাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করিল, আমাদেরই বা কি করিতে হইবে? তিনি তাহাদিগকে বলিলেন, কাহারও প্রতি দৌরাত্ম্য করিও না, অন্যায়পূর্ব্বক কিছু আদায়ও করিও না, এবং তোমাদের বেতনে সন্তুষ্ট থাকিও।

Soldiers also asked him, saying, "What about us? What must we do?" He said to them, "Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages."

আর লোকেরা যখন অপেক্ষায় ছিল, এবং যোহনের বিষয়ে সকলে মনে মনে এই তর্ক বিতর্ক করিতেছিল, কি জানি, ইনিই বা সেই খ্রীষ্ট,

As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,
16
তখন যোহন উত্তর করিয়া সকলকে কহিলেন, আমি তোমাদিগকে জলে বাপ্তাইজ করিতেছি বটে, কিন্তু এমন এক জন আসিতেছেন, যিনি আমা অপেক্ষা শক্তিমান, যাঁহার পাদুকার বন্ধন খুলিবার যোগ্য আমি নই; তিনি তোমাদিগকে পবিত্র আত্মা ও অগ্নিতে বাপ্তাইজ করিবেন।

John answered them all, "I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire,

তাঁহার কুলা তাঁহার হস্তে আছে; তিনি আপন খামার সুপরিষ্কৃত করিবেন, ও গোম আপন গোলাতে সংগ্রহ করিবেন, কিন্তু তুষ অনির্ব্বাণ অগ্নিতে পোড়াইয়া দিবেন।

whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

আরও অনেক উপদেশ দিয়া যোহন লোকদের নিকটে সুসমাচার প্রচার করিতেন।

Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people,

কিন্তু হেরোদ রাজা আপন ভ্রাতার স্ত্রী হেরোদিয়ার বিষয়ে এবং আপনার সমস্ত দুষ্কর্ম্মের বিষয়ে তাঁহা কর্ত্তৃক দোষীকৃত হইলে, নিজ দুষ্কার্য্য সকলের উপরে এইটীও যোগ করিলেন,

but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done,
20
যোহনকে কারাগারে বদ্ধ করিলেন।

added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.
21
আর যখন সমস্ত লোক বাপ্তাইজিত হয়, তখন যীশুও বাপ্তাইজিত হইয়া প্রার্থনা করিতেছেন, এমন সময়ে স্বর্গ খুলিয়া গেল,

Now it happened, when all the people were baptized, Jesus also had been baptized, and was praying. The sky was opened,

এবং পবিত্র আত্মা দৈহিক আকারে, কপোতের ন্যায়, তাঁহার উপরে নামিয়া আসিলেন, আর স্বর্গ হইতে এই বাণী হইল, “তুমি আমার প্রিয় পুত্র, তোমাতেই আমি প্রীত।”

and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form as a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying "You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased."

আর যীশু নিজে, যখন তিনি কার্য্য আরম্ভ করেন, কমবেশ ত্রিশ বৎসর বয়স্ক ছিলেন; তিনি, যেমন ধরা হইত, যোষেফের পুত্র—ইনি এলির পুত্র,

Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years old, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,

ইনি মত্ততের পুত্র, ইনি লেবির পুত্র, ইনি মল্কির পুত্র, ইনি যান্নায়ের পুত্র, ইনি যোষেফের পুত্র,

the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
25
ইনি মত্তথিয়ের পুত্র, ইনি আমোসের পুত্র, ইনি নহূমের পুত্র, ইনি ইষ্লির পুত্র,

the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,

ইনি নগির পুত্র, ইনি মাটের পুত্র, ইনি মত্তথিয়ের পুত্র, ইনি শিমিয়ির পুত্র, ইনি যোষেখের পুত্র,

the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Joseph, the son of Judah,

ইনি যূদার পুত্র, ইনি যোহানার পুত্র, ইনি রীষার পুত্র, ইনি সরুব্বাবিলের পুত্র, ইনি শল্টীয়েলের পুত্র,

the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,

ইনি নেরির পুত্র, ইনি মল্কির পুত্র, ইনি অদ্দীর পুত্র, ইনি কোষমের পুত্র, ইনি ইল্মাদমের পুত্র,

the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmodam, the son of Er,
