প্রথম অবধি যাঁহারা স্বচক্ষে দেখিয়াছেন, এবং বাক্যের সেবা করিয়া আসিয়াছেন, তাঁহারা আমাদিগকে যেমন সমর্পণ করিয়াছেন,

Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us,

তদনুসারে অনেকেই আমাদের মধ্যে সম্পূর্ণরূপে গৃহীত বিষয়াবলির বিবরণ লিপিবদ্ধ করিতে হস্তক্ষেপ করিয়াছেন,

even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us,

সেই জন্য আমিও প্রথম হইতে সকল বিষয় সবিশেষ অনুসন্ধান করিয়াছি বলিয়া, হে মহামহিম থিয়ফিল, আপনাকে আনুপূর্ব্বিক বিবরণ লেখা বিহিত বুঝিলাম;

it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus;

যেন, আপনি যে সকল বিষয় শিক্ষা পাইয়াছেন, সেই সকল বিষয়ের নিশ্চয়তা জ্ঞাত হইতে পারেন।

that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.

যিহূদিয়ার রাজা হেরোদের সময়ে অবিয়ের পালার মধ্যে সখরিয় নামে এক জন যাজক ছিলেন; তাঁহার স্ত্রী হারোণবংশীয়া, তাঁহার নাম ইলীশাবেৎ।

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6
তাঁহারা দুই জন ঈশ্বরের সাক্ষাতে ধার্ম্মিক ছিলেন, প্রভুর সমস্ত আজ্ঞা ও বিধি অনুসারে নির্দ্দোষরূপে চলিতেন।

They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
7
তাঁহাদের সন্তান ছিল না, কেননা ইলীশাবেৎ বন্ধ্যা ছিলেন, এবং দুই জনেরই অধিক বয়স হইয়াছিল।

But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.
8
একদা যখন সখরিয় নিজ পালার অনুক্রমে ঈশ্বরের সাক্ষাতে যাজকীয় কার্য্য করিতেছিলেন,

Now it happened, while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his division,
9
তখন যাজকীয় কার্য্যের প্রথানুসারে গুলিবাঁট ক্রমে তাঁহাকে প্রভুর মন্দিরে প্রবেশ করিয়া ধূপ জ্বালাইতে হইল।

according to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
10
সেই ধূপদাহের সময়ে সমস্ত লোক বাহিরে থাকিয়া প্রার্থনা করিতেছিল।
10
The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.
11
তখন প্রভুর এক দূত ধূপবেদির দক্ষিণ পার্শ্বে দাঁড়াইয়া তাঁহাকে দর্শন দিলেন।

An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12
দেখিয়া সখরিয় ত্রাসযুক্ত হইলেন, ভয় তাঁহাকে আক্রমণ করিল।
12
Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.
13
কিন্তু দূত তাঁহাকে বলিলেন, সখরিয়, ভয় করিও না, কেননা তোমার বিনতি গ্রাহ্য হইয়াছে, তোমার স্ত্রী ইলীশাবেৎ তোমার জন্য পুত্র প্রসব করিবেন, ও তুমি তাহার নাম যোহন রাখিবে।

But the angel said to him, "Don't be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.
14
আর তোমার আনন্দ ও উল্লাস হইবে, এবং তাহার জন্মে অনেকে আনন্দিত হইবে।
14
You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth.
15
কারণ সে প্রভুর সম্মুখে মহান্ হইবে, এবং দ্রাক্ষারস কি সুরা কিছুই পান করিবে না; আর সে মাতার গর্ভ হইতেই পবিত্র আত্মায় পরিপূর্ণ হইবে;
15
For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.
16
এবং ইস্রায়েল-সন্তানদের মধ্যে অনেককে তাহাদের ঈশ্বর প্রভুর প্রতি ফিরাইবে।

He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord, their God.
17
সে তাঁহার সম্মুখে এলিয়ের আত্মায় ও পরাক্রমে গমন করিবে, যেন পিতৃগণের হৃদয় সন্তানদের প্রতি, ও অনাজ্ঞাবহদিগকে ধার্ম্মিকদের বিজ্ঞতায় চলিবার জন্য ফিরাইতে পারে, প্রভুর নিমিত্ত সুসজ্জিত এক প্রজামণ্ডলী প্রস্তুত করিতে পারে।

He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, 'to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,' and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
18
তখন সখরিয় দূতকে কহিলেন, কিসে ইহা জানিব? কেননা আমি বৃদ্ধ এবং আমার স্ত্রীরও অধিক বয়স হইয়াছে।

Zacharias said to the angel, "How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years."
19
দূত উত্তর করিয়া তাঁহাকে কহিলেন, আমি গাব্রিয়েল, ঈশ্বরের সম্মুখে দাঁড়াইয়া থাকি, তোমার সহিত কথা কহিবার ও তোমাকে এই সকল বিষয়ের সুসমাচার দিবার জন্য প্রেরিত হইয়াছি।

The angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news.
20
আর দেখ, এই সকল যে দিন ঘটিবে, সেই দিন পর্য্যন্ত তুমি নীরব থাকিবে, কথা কহিতে পারিবে না; যেহেতুক আমার এই যে সকল বাক্য যথাসময়ে সফল হইবে, ইহাতে তুমি বিশ্বাস করিলে না।

Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you didn't believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time."
21
আর লোক সকল সখরিয়ের অপেক্ষা করিতেছিল, এবং মন্দিরের মধ্যে তাঁহার বিলম্ব হওয়াতে তাহারা আশ্চর্য্য জ্ঞান করিতে লাগিল।

The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple.
22
পরে তিনি বাহিরে আসিয়া তাহাদের কাছে কথা কহিতে পারিলেন না; তখন তাহারা বুঝিল যে, মন্দিরের মধ্যে তিনি কোন দর্শন পাইয়াছেন; আর তিনি তাহাদের নিকটে নানা সঙ্কেত করিতে থাকিলেন, এবং বোবা হইয়া রহিলেন।

When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute.
23
পরে তাঁহার উপাসনার সময় পূর্ণ হইলে তিনি নিজ গৃহে চলিয়া গেলেন।

It happened, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house.
24
এই সময়ের পরে তাঁহার স্ত্রী ইলীশাবেৎ গর্ভবতী হইলেন; আর তিনি পাঁচ মাস আপনাকে সংগোপনে রাখিলেন, বলিলেন,

After these days Elizabeth, his wife, conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying,
25
লোকদের মধ্যে আমার অপযশ খণ্ডাইবার নিমিত্ত এই সময়ে দৃষ্টিপাত করিয়া প্রভু আমার প্রতি এইরূপ ব্যবহার করিয়াছেন।

"Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach among men."
26
পরে ষষ্ঠ মাসে গাব্রিয়েল দূত ঈশ্বরের নিকট হইতে গালীল দেশের নাসরৎ নামক নগরে একটী কুমারীর নিকটে প্রেরিত হইলেন,

Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27
তিনি দায়ূদ-কুলের যোষেফ নামক পুরুষের প্রতি বাগ্দত্তা হইয়াছিলেন; সেই কুমারীর নাম মরিয়ম।
27
to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary.
28
দূত গৃহমধ্যে তাঁহার কাছে আসিয়া কহিলেন, অয়ি মহানুগৃহীতে, মঙ্গল হউক; প্রভু তোমার সহবর্ত্তী।

Having come in, the angel said to her, "Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!"
29
কিন্তু তিনি সেই বাক্যে অতিশয় উদ্বিগ্ন হইলেন, আর মনে মনে আন্দোলন করিতে লাগিলেন, এ কেমন মঙ্গলবাদ?

But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.
30
দূত তাঁহাকে কহিলেন, মরিয়ম, ভয় করিও না, কেননা তুমি ঈশ্বরের নিকটে অনুগ্রহ পাইয়াছ।
30
The angel said to her, "Don't be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31
আর দেখ, তুমি গর্ভবতী হইয়া পুত্র প্রসব করিবে, ও তাঁহার নাম যীশু রাখিবে।
31
Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and will call his name 'Jesus.'
32
তিনি মহান্ হইবেন, আর তাঁহাকে পরাৎপরের পুত্র বলা যাইবে; আর প্রভু ঈশ্বর তাঁহার পিতা দায়ূদের সিংহাসন তাঁহাকে দিবেন;
32
He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David,
33
তিনি যাকোব-কুলের উপরে যুগে যুগে রাজত্ব করিবেন, ও তাঁহার রাজ্যের শেষ হইবে না।
33
and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his kingdom."
34
তখন মরিয়ম দূতকে কহিলেন, ইহা কিরূপে হইবে? আমি ত পুরুষকে জানি না।
34
Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?"
35
দূত উত্তর করিয়া তাঁহাকে কহিলেন, পবিত্র আত্মা তোমার উপরে আসিবেন, এবং পরাৎপরের শক্তি তোমার উপরে ছায়া করিবে; এই কারণ যে পবিত্র সন্তান জন্মিবেন, তাঁহাকে ঈশ্বরের পুত্র বলা যাইবে।

The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.
36
আর দেখ, তোমার জ্ঞাতি যে ইলীশাবেৎ, তিনিও বৃদ্ধ বয়সে পুত্রসন্তান গর্ভে ধারণ করিয়াছেন; লোকে যাঁহাকে বন্ধ্যা বলিত, এই তাঁহার ষষ্ঠ মাস।
36
Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
37
কেননা ঈশ্বরের কোন বাক্য শক্তিহীন হইবে না।
37
For everything spoken by God is possible."
38
তখন মরিয়ম কহিলেন, দেখুন, আমি প্রভুর দাসী; আপনার বাক্যানুসারে আমার প্রতি ঘটুক। পরে দূত তাঁহার নিকট হইতে প্রস্থান করিলেন।
38
Mary said, "Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to your word." The angel departed from her.
39
তৎকালে মরিয়ম উঠিয়া সত্বর পাহাড় অঞ্চলে যিহূদার এক নগরে গেলেন,
39
Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah,
40
এবং সখরিয়ের গৃহে প্রবেশ করিয়া ইলীশাবেৎকে মঙ্গলবাদ করিলেন।
40
and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.
41
আর এইরূপ হইল, যখন ইলীশাবেৎ মরিয়মের মঙ্গলবাদ শুনিলেন, তখন তাঁহার জঠরে শিশুটী নাচিয়া উঠিল; আর ইলীশাবেৎ পবিত্র আত্মায় পূর্ণ হইলেন,

It happened, when Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, that the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
42
এবং উচ্চরবে মহাশব্দ করিয়া বলিলেন, নারীগণের মধ্যে তুমি ধন্য, এবং ধন্য তোমার জঠরের ফল।

She called out with a loud voice, and said, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
43
আর আমার প্রভুর মাতা আমার কাছে আসিবেন, আমার এমন সৌভাগ্য কোথা হইতে হইল?
43
Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44
কেননা দেখ, তোমার মঙ্গলবাদের ধ্বনি আমার কর্ণে প্রবেশ করিবামাত্র শিশুটী আমার জঠরে উল্লাসে নাচিয়া উঠিল।
44
For behold, when the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy!
45
আর ধন্য যিনি বিশ্বাস করিলেন, কারণ প্রভু হইতে যাহা যাহা তাঁহাকে বলা গিয়াছে, সে সমস্ত সিদ্ধ হইবে।
45
Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!"
46
তখন মরিয়ম কহিলেন, আমার প্রাণ প্রভুর মহিমা কীর্ত্তন করিতেছে,
46
Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord.
47
আমার আত্মা আমার ত্রাণকর্ত্তা ঈশ্বরে উল্লাসিত হইয়াছে।
47
My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior,
48
কারণ তিনি নিজ দাসীর নীচ অবস্থার প্রতি দৃষ্টিপাত করিয়াছেন; কেননা দেখ, এই অবধি পুরুষপরম্পরা সকলে আমাকে ধন্য বলিবে।
48
For he has looked at the humble state of his handmaid. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.
49
কারণ যিনি পরাক্রমী, তিনি আমার জন্য মহৎ মহৎ কার্য্য করিয়াছেন; এবং তাঁহার নাম পবিত্র।
49
For he who is mighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name.
50
আর যাহারা তাঁহাকে ভয় করে, তাঁহার দয়া তাহাদের পুরুষপরম্পরায় বর্ত্তে।
50
His mercy is for generations of generations on those who fear him.
51
তিনি আপন বাহু দ্বারা বিক্রমকার্য্য করিয়াছেন; যাহারা আপনাদের হৃদয়ের কল্পনায় অহঙ্কারী, তাহাদিগকে ছিন্নভিন্ন করিয়াছেন।

He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart.
52
তিনি বিক্রমীদিগকে সিংহাসন হইতে নামাইয়া দিয়াছেন, ও নীচদিগকে উন্নত করিয়াছেন;
52
He has put down princes from their thrones. And has exalted the lowly.
53
তিনি ক্ষুধার্ত্তদিগকে উত্তম উত্তম দ্রব্যে পূর্ণ করিয়াছেন, এবং ধনবান্দিগকে রিক্তহস্তে বিদায় করিয়াছেন।

He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty.
54
তিনি আপন দাস ইস্রায়েলের উপকার করিয়াছেন, যেন, আমাদের পিতৃগণের প্রতি উক্ত আপন বাক্যানুসারে

He has given help to Israel, his servant, that he might remember mercy,
55
অব্রাহাম ও তাঁহার বংশের প্রতি চিরতরে করুণা স্মরণ করেন।
55
As he spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and his seed forever."
56
আর মরিয়ম মাস তিনেক ইলীশাবেতের নিকটে রহিলেন, পরে নিজ গৃহে ফিরিয়া গেলেন।

Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her house.
57
পরে ইলীশাবেতের প্রসবকাল সম্পূর্ণ হইলে তিনি পুত্র প্রসব করিলেন।
57
Now the time that Elizabeth should give birth was fulfilled, and she brought forth a son.
58
তখন, তাঁহার প্রতিবাসী ও আত্মীয়গণ শুনিতে পাইল যে, প্রভু তাঁহার প্রতি মহা দয়া করিয়াছেন, আর তাহারা তাঁহার সহিত আনন্দ করিল।

Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her, and they rejoiced with her.
59
পরে তাহারা অষ্টম দিনে বালকটীর ত্বক্চ্ছেদ করিতে আসিল, আর তাহার পিতার নামানুসারে তাহার নাম সখরিয় রাখিতে চাহিল।

It happened on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of the father.
60
কিন্তু তাহার মাতা উত্তর করিয়া কহিলেন, তাহা নয়, ইহার নাম যোহন রাখা যাইবে।
60
His mother answered, "Not so; but he will be called John."
61
তাহারা তাঁহাকে কহিল, আপনার গোষ্ঠীর মধ্যে এ নামে ত কাহাকেও ডাকা হয় না।
61
They said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name."
62
পরে তাহারা তাহার পিতাকে সঙ্কেতে জিজ্ঞাসা করিল, আপনার ইচ্ছা কি? ইহার কি নাম রাখা যাইবে?
62
They made signs to his father, what he would have him called.
63
তিনি একখান লিপিফলক চাহিয়া লইয়া লিখিলেন, ইহার নাম যোহন। তাহাতে সকলে আশ্চর্য্য জ্ঞান করিল।

He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." They all marveled.
64
আর তখনই তাঁহার মুখ ও তাঁহার জিহ্বা খুলিয়া গেল, আর তিনি কথা কহিলেন, ঈশ্বরের ধন্যবাদ করিতে লাগিলেন।

His mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue freed, and he spoke, blessing God.
65
ইহাতে চারিদিকের প্রতিবাসীরা সকলে ভয়গ্রস্ত হইল, আর যিহূদিয়ার পাহাড় অঞ্চলের সর্ব্বত্র লোকে এই সমস্ত কথা বলাবলি করিতে লাগিল।

Fear came on all who lived around them, and all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea.
66
আর যত লোক শুনিল, সকলে তাহা হৃদয়ে স্থান দিয়া বলিতে লাগিল, এ বালকটী তবে কি হইবে? কারণ প্রভুর হস্তও তাহার সহবর্ত্তী ছিল।

All who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, "What then will this child be?" The hand of the Lord was with him.
67
তখন তাহার পিতা সখরিয় পবিত্র আত্মায় পরিপূর্ণ হইলেন, এবং ভাববাণী বলিলেন; তিনি কহিলেন,
67
His father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
68
ধন্য প্রভু, ইস্রায়েলের ঈশ্বর; কেননা তিনি তত্ত্বাবধান করিয়াছেন, আপন প্রজাদের জন্য মুক্তি সাধন করিয়াছেন,
68
"Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, For he has visited and worked redemption for his people;
69
আর আমাদের জন্য আপন দাস দায়ূদের কুলে পরিত্রাণের এক শৃঙ্গ উঠাইয়াছেন,
69
And has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David
70
—যেমন তিনি পুরাকাল অবধি তাঁহার সেই পবিত্র ভাববাদিগণের মুখ দ্বারা বলিয়া আসিয়াছেন—
70
(As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets who have been from of old),
71
আমাদের শত্রুগণ হইতে ও যাহারা আমাদিগকে দ্বেষ করে, তাহাদের সকলের হস্ত হইতে পরিত্রাণ করিয়াছেন।
71
Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us;
72
আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষগণের প্রতি কৃপা করিবার জন্য, আপন পবিত্র নিয়ম স্মরণ করিবার জন্য।
72
To show mercy towards our fathers, To remember his holy covenant,
73
এ সেই দিব্য, যাহা তিনি আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষ অব্রাহামের কাছে শপথ করিয়াছিলেন,
73
The oath which he spoke to Abraham, our father,
74
আমাদিগকে এই বর দিবার জন্য, যে আমরা শত্রুগণের হস্ত হইতে নিস্তার পাইয়া, নির্ভয়ে সাধুতায় ও ধার্ম্মিকতায় তাঁহার আরাধনা করিতে পারিব,
74
To grant to us that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, should serve him without fear,
75
তাঁহার সাক্ষাতে যাবজ্জীবন করিতে পারিব।
75
In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.
76
আর, হে বালক, তুমি পরাৎপরের ভাববাদী বলিয়া আখ্যাত হইবে, কারণ তুমি প্রভুর সম্মুখে চলিবে, তাঁহার পথ প্রস্তুত করিবার জন্য;
76
And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, For you will go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways,
77
তাঁহার প্রজাদের পাপমোচনে তাহাদিগকে পরিত্রাণের জ্ঞান দিবার জন্য।
77
To give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins,
78
ইহা আমাদের ঈশ্বরের সেই কৃপাযুক্ত স্নেহহেতু হইবে, যদ্দ্বারা ঊর্দ্ধ হইতে ঊষা আমাদের তত্ত্বাবধান করিবে,

Because of the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the dawn from on high will visit us,
79
যাহারা অন্ধকারে ও মৃত্যুচ্ছায়ায় বসিয়া আছে, তাহাদের উপরে দীপ্তি দিবার জন্য, আমাদের চরণ শান্তিপথে চালাইবার জন্য।
79
To shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; To guide our feet into the way of peace."
