1কিন্তু ইহাতে যোনা মহা বিরক্ত ও ক্রুদ্ধ হইলেন।
1But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.
2তিনি সদাপ্রভুর কাছে প্রার্থনা করিয়া কহিলেন, হে সদাপ্রভু, বিনতি করি, আমি স্বদেশে থাকিতে কি ইহাই বলি নাই? সেই জন্য ত্বরা করিয়া তর্শীশে পলাইতে গিয়াছিলাম; কেননা আমি জানিতাম, তুমি কৃপাময় ও স্নেহশীল ঈশ্বর, ক্রোধে ধীর ও দয়াতে মহান্‌, এবং অমঙ্গলের বিষয়ে অনুশোচনকারী।
2He prayed to Yahweh, and said, "Please, Yahweh, wasn't this what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you repent of the evil.
3অতএব এখন, হে সদাপ্রভু, বিনতি করি, আমা হইতে আমার প্রাণ হরণ কর, কেননা আমার জীবন অপেক্ষা মরণ ভাল।
3Therefore now, Yahweh, take, I beg you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live."
4সদাপ্রভু কহিলেন, তুমি ক্রোধ করিয়া কি ভাল করিতেছ?
4Yahweh said, "Is it right for you to be angry?"
5তখন যোনা নগরের বাহিরে গিয়া নগরের পূর্ব্বদিকে বসিয়া রহিলেন; সেখানে তিনি আপনার নিমিত্ত এক কুটীর নির্ম্মাণ করিয়া তাহার নীচে ছায়াতে বসিলেন, নগরের কি দশা হয় দেখিবার অপেক্ষা করিতে লাগিলেন।
5Then Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a booth, and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city.
6তখন সদাপ্রভু ঈশ্বর এক এরণ্ড গাছ নিরূপণ করিলেন; আর সেই গাছটী বাড়াইয়া যোনার উপরে আনিলেন, যেন তাঁহার মস্তকের উপরে ছায়া হয়, যেন তাঁহার দুর্ম্মতি হইতে তাঁহাকে উদ্ধার করা হয়। আর যোনা সেই এরণ্ড গাছটীর জন্য বড় আহ্লাদিত হইলেন।
6Yahweh God prepared a vine, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine.
7কিন্তু পর দিন অরুণোদয়কালে ঈশ্বর এক কীট নিরূপণ করিলেন, সে ঐ এরণ্ড গাছটীকে দংশন করিলে তাহা শুষ্ক হইয়া পড়িল।
7But God prepared a worm at dawn the next day, and it chewed on the vine, so that it withered.
8পরে যখন সূর্য্য উঠিল, ঈশ্বর উষ্ণ পূর্ব্বীয় বায়ু নিরূপণ করিলেন, তাহাতে যোনার মস্তকে এমন রৌদ্র লাগিল যে, তিনি পরিক্লান্ত হইয়া আপন মৃত্যু প্রার্থনা করিয়া কহিলেন, আমার জীবন অপেক্ষা মরণ ভাল।
8It happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah's head, so that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is better for me to die than to live."
9তখন ঈশ্বর যোনাকে কহিলেন, তুমি এরণ্ড গাছটীর নিমিত্ত ক্রোধ করিয়া কি ভাল করিতেছ? তিনি কহিলেন, মৃত্যু পর্য্যন্ত আমার ক্রোধ করাই ভাল।
9God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?" He said, "I am right to be angry, even to death."
10সদাপ্রভু কহিলেন, তুমি এই এরণ্ড গাছের নিমিত্ত কোন শ্রম কর নাই, এবং এটা বাড়াও নাই; ইহা এক রাত্রিতে উৎপন্ন ও এক রাত্রিতে উচ্ছিন্ন হইল, তথাপি তুমি ইহার প্রতি দয়ার্দ্র হইয়াছ।
10Yahweh said, "You have been concerned for the vine, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night.
11তবে আমি কি নীনবীর প্রতি, ঐ মহানগরের প্রতি, দয়ার্দ্র হইব না? তথায় এমন এক লক্ষ বিংশতি সহস্রের অধিক মনুষ্য আছে, যাহারা দক্ষিণ হস্ত হইতে বাম হস্তের প্রভেদ জানে না; আর অনেক পশুও আছে।
11Shouldn't I be concerned for Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who can't discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?"
