1উপদেশকের কথা; তিনি দায়ূদের পুত্র, যিরূশালেমস্থ রাজা।
1The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:
2উপদেশক কহিতেছেন, অসারের অসার, অসারের অসার, সকলই অসার।
2"Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher; "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity."
3মনুষ্য সূর্য্যের নীচে যে পরিশ্রমে পরিশ্রান্ত হয়, তাহার সেই সমস্ত পরিশ্রমে তাহার কি ফল দেখিতে পায়?
3What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?
4এক পুরুষ চলিয়া যায়, আর এক পুরুষ আইসে; কিন্তু পৃথিবী নিত্যস্থায়ী।
4One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.
5সূর্য্যও উঠে, আবার সূর্য্য অস্ত যায়; এবং সত্বর স্বস্থানে যায়, সেখানে গিয়া উঠে।
5The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.
6বায়ু দক্ষিণ দিকে যায় ও ঘুরিয়া ঘুরিয়া উত্তর দিকে যায়; নিরন্তর ঘুরিয়া ঘুরিয়া আপন পথে যায়, এবং বায়ু আপন চক্রপথে ফিরিয়া আসে।
6The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.
7জলস্রোত সকল সমুদ্রে প্রবেশ করে, তথাচ সমুদ্র পূর্ণ হয় না; জলস্রোত সকল যে স্থানে যায়, সেই স্থানে পুনরায় চলিয়া যায়।
7All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.
8সমস্ত বিষয় ক্লান্তিজনক; তাহার বর্ণনা করা মনুষ্যের অসাধ্য; দর্শনে চক্ষু তৃপ্ত হয় না, এবং শ্রবণে কর্ণ তৃপ্ত হয় না।
8All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9যাহা হইয়াছে, তাহাই হইবে; যাহা করা গিয়াছে, তাহাই করা যাইবে; সূর্য্যের নীচে নূতন কিছুই নাই।
9That which has been is that which shall be; and that which has been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
10এমন কি কিছু আছে, যাহার সম্বন্ধে মনুষ্য বলে, দেখ, ইহা নূতন? তাহা পূর্ব্বে, আমাদের পূর্ব্ববর্ত্তী যুগপর্য্যায়ে ছিল;
10Is there a thing of which it may be said, "Behold, this is new?" It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.
11পূর্ব্বকালীয় লোকদের বিষয় কাহারও স্মরণে নাই; এবং ভাবী কালে যাহারা জন্মিবে, তাহাদের বিষয়ও পরবর্ত্তী ভাবী কালের লোকদের স্মরণে থাকিবে না।
11There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.
12আমি উপদেশক, যিরূশালেমে ইস্রায়েলের উপরে রাজা ছিলাম।
12I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
13আর আমি প্রজ্ঞা দ্বারা আকাশের নীচে কৃত সমস্ত বিষয়ের অনুশীলন ও অনুসন্ধান করিতে মনোযোগ করিতাম; ঈশ্বর মনুষ্য-সন্তানগণকে কষ্টযুক্ত করিবার জন্য এই অতি ভারী কষ্ট দিয়াছেন।
13I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.
14সূর্য্যের নীচে কৃত সমস্ত কার্য্য আমি দেখিয়াছি; দেখ, সে সকলই অসার ও বায়ুভক্ষণ মাত্র।
14I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.
15যাহা বক্র, তাহা সোজা করা যায় না; এবং যাহা নাই, তাহা গণনা করা যায় না।
15That which is crooked can't be made straight; and that which is lacking can't be counted.
16আমি আপন হৃদয়ের সহিত কথোপকথন করিলাম, কহিলাম, দেখ, আমার পূর্ব্বে যিরূশালেমে যে সকল অধ্যক্ষ ছিলেন, সেই সকল অপেক্ষা আমি অধিক প্রজ্ঞাবিশিষ্ট হইয়াছি, এবং আমার হৃদয় নানা প্রকার প্রজ্ঞায় ও বিদ্যায় পারদর্শী হইয়াছে।
16I said to myself, "Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge."
17আমি প্রজ্ঞা জানিতে, এবং ক্ষিপ্রতা ও অজ্ঞানতা জানিতে মনোযোগ করিলাম, আমি জানিলাম যে, তাহাও বায়ুভক্ষণ মাত্র।
17I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.
18কেননা প্রজ্ঞার বাহুল্যে মনস্তাপের বাহুল্য হয়; এবং যে বিদ্যার বৃদ্ধি করে, সে ব্যাথার বৃদ্ধি করে।
18For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
