আপল্লো যে সময়ে করিন্থে ছিলেন, সে সময়ে পৌল উত্তর অঞ্চল দিয়া গমন করিয়া ইফিষে আসিলেন।

It happened that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples.
2
তথায় কয়েক জন শিষ্যের দেখা পাইলেন; আর তাহাদিগকে বলিলেন, বিশ্বাসী হইয়া তোমরা কি পবিত্র আত্মা পাইয়াছিলে? তাহারা তাঁহাকে কহিল, পবিত্র আত্মা যে আছেন, তাহাও আমরা শুনি নাই।

He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They said to him, "No, we haven't even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."

তিনি কহিলেন, তবে কিসে বাপ্তাইজিত হইয়াছিলে? তাহারা কহিল, যোহনের বাপ্তিস্মে।

He said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism."

পৌল কহিলেন, যোহন মনপরিবর্ত্তনের বাপ্তিস্মে বাপ্তাইজ করিতেন, লোকদিগকে বলিতেন, যিনি তাঁহার পরে আসিবেন, তাঁহাতে অর্থাৎ যীশুতে তাহাদিগকে বিশ্বাস করিতে হইবে।

Paul said, "John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus."

এ কথা শুনিয়া তাহারা প্রভু যীশুর নামে বাপ্তাইজিত হইল।

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

আর পৌল তাহাদের উপরে হস্তার্পণ করিলে পবিত্র আত্মা তাহাদের উপরে আসিলেন, তাহাতে তাহারা নানা ভাষায় কথা কহিতে এবং ভাববাণী বলিতে লাগিল।

When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke with other languages and prophesied.

তাহারা সর্ব্বশুদ্ধ বারো জন পুরুষ ছিল।
7
They were about twelve men in all.
8
পরে তিনি সমাজ-গৃহে প্রবেশ করিয়া তিন মাস সাহস পূর্ব্বক কথা কহিলেন, ঈশ্বরের রাজ্যের বিষয়ে কথা প্রসঙ্গ করিতে ও প্রবৃত্তি দিতে লাগিলেন।

He entered into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning the Kingdom of God.

কিন্তু যখন কয়েক জন কঠিন ও অবাধ্য হইয়া লোকসমূহের সাক্ষাতে সেই পথের নিন্দা করিতে লাগিল, তখন তিনি তাহাদের নিকট হইতে চলিয়া গিয়া শিষ্যগণকে পৃথক্ করিলেন ও প্রতিদিন তূরাণ্ণের বিদ্যালয়ে কথা প্রসঙ্গ করিতে লাগিলেন।

But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

এইরূপে দুই বৎসর কাল চলিল; তাহাতে এশিয়া-নিবাসী যিহূদী ও গ্রীক সকলেই প্রভুর বাক্য শুনিতে পাইল।

This continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

আর ঈশ্বর পৌলের হস্ত দ্বারা অসামান্য পরাক্রম-কার্য্য সাধন করিতেন;

God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul,

এমন কি, তাঁহার গাত্র হইতে রুমাল কিম্বা গামছা পীড়িত লোকদের নিকটে আনিলে ব্যাধি তাহাদিগকে ছাড়িয়া যাইত, এবং দুষ্ট আত্মারা বাহির হইয়া যাইত।

so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the evil spirits went out.

আর কয়েক জন পর্য্যটনকারী যিহূদী ওঝাও দুষ্ট আত্মাবিষ্ট লোকদের কাছে প্রভু যীশুর নাম জপ করিতে প্রবৃত্ত হইয়া বলিতে লাগিল, পৌল যাঁহাকে প্রচার করেন, সেই যীশুর দিব্য দিয়া তোমাদিগকে বলিতেছি।

But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to name over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, "We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches."

আর স্কিবা নামে এক জন যিহূদী প্রধান যাজকের সাত পুত্র ছিল, তাহারা এই প্রকার করিত।

There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.
15
তাহাতে দুষ্ট আত্মা উত্তর করিয়া তাহাদিগকে কহিল, যীশুকে আমি জানি, পৌলকেও চিনি, কিন্তু তোমরা কে?

The evil spirit answered, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you ?"
16
তখন যে ব্যক্তি দুষ্ট আত্মাবিষ্ট, সে তাহাদের উপরে লাফ দিয়া পড়িল, দুই জনকে পরাভব করিয়া তাহাদের উপরে এমন বল প্রকাশ করিল যে, তাহারা উলঙ্গ ও ক্ষতবিক্ষত হইয়া সেই গৃহ হইতে পলায়ন করিল।

The man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17
আর ইহা ইফিষ-নিবাসী যিহূদী ও গ্রীক সকলেই জানিতে পাইল, তাহাতে সকলে ভয়গ্রস্ত হইল, এবং প্রভু যীশুর নাম মহিমান্বিত হইতে লাগিল।

This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

আর যাহারা বিশ্বাস করিয়াছিল, তাহাদের অনেকে আসিয়া আপন আপন ক্রিয়া স্বীকার ও প্রকাশ করিতে লাগিল।

Many also of those who had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.
19
আর যাহারা যাদুক্রিয়া করিত, তাহাদের মধ্যে অনেকে আপন আপন পুস্তক আনিয়া একত্র করিয়া সকলের সাক্ষাতে পোড়াইয়া ফেলিল; সে সকলের মূল্য গণনা করিলে দেখা গেল, পঞ্চাশ সহস্র রৌপ্যমুদ্রা।

Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted the price of them, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.

এইরূপে সপরাক্রমে প্রভুর বাক্য বৃদ্ধি পাইতে ও প্রবল হইতে লাগিল।

So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.
21
এই সকল কার্য্য সম্পন্ন হইলে পর পৌল আত্মায় সঙ্কল্প করিলেন যে, তিনি মাকিদনিয়া ও আখায়া যাইবার পর যিরূশালেমে যাইবেন, তিনি কহিলেন, তথায় যাইবার পর আমাকে রোম নগরও দেখিতে হইবে।

Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome."

আর যাঁহারা তাঁহার পরিচর্য্যা করিতেন, তাঁহাদের দুই জনকে, তীমথিয় ও ইরাস্তকে, মাকিদনিয়াতে প্রেরণ করিয়া তিনি আপনি কিছু কাল এশিয়ায় রহিলেন।

Having sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

আর সেই সময়ে এই পথের বিষয় বিষম হুলস্থূল পড়িয়া গেল।

About that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.
24
কারণ দীমীত্রিয় নামে এক জন স্বর্ণকার দীয়ানার রৌপ্যময় মন্দির নির্ম্মাণ করিত, এবং শিল্পকরদিগকে যথেষ্ট কাজ যোগাইয়া দিত।

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,
25
সেই ব্যক্তি তাহাদিগকে এবং সেই ব্যবসায়ের কারিকরদিগকে ডাকিয়া কহিল, মহাশয়েরা, আপনারা জানেন, এই কাজের দ্বারা আমাদের ধনাগম হয়।

whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, "Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.

আর আপনারা দেখিতেছেন, ও শুনিতেছেন, কেবল এই ইফিষে নয়, প্রায় সমস্ত এশিয়ায় এই পৌল বিস্তর লোককে প্রবৃত্তি দিয়া ফিরাইয়াছে, এই বলিয়াছে, যে, যাহারা হস্তনির্ম্মিত, তাহারা ঈশ্বর নয়।

You see and hear, that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands.

ইহাতে এই আশঙ্কা হইতেছে, কেবল আমাদের এই ব্যবসায়ের দুর্নাম হইবে, তাহা নয়; কিন্তু মহাদেবী দীয়ানার মন্দির নগণ্য হইয়া পড়িবে, আবার যাঁহাকে সমস্ত এশিয়া, এমন কি, জগৎসংসার পূজা করে, তিনিও মহিমাচ্যুত হইবেন।

Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing, and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships."

এই কথা শুনিয়া তাহারা ক্রোধে পরিপূর্ণ হইয়া উচ্চৈঃস্বরে বলিতে লাগিল, ইফিষীয়দের দীয়ানাই মহাদেবী।

When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"

তাহাতে নগর গণ্ডগোলে পরিপূর্ণ হইল; পরে লোকেরা একযোগে রঙ্গভূমিতে বেগে দৌড়িল, আর মাকিদনিয়ার গায় ও আরিষ্টার্খ নামে পৌলের দুই জন সহযাত্রীকে ধরিয়া লইয়া গেল।

The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel.

তখন পৌল লোকদের কাছে যাইবার মানস করিলে শিষ্যগণ তাঁহাকে যাইতে দিল না।

When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn't allow him.
31
আর এশিয়ার অধ্যক্ষদের মধ্যে কয়েক জন তাঁহার বন্ধু ছিলেন বলিয়া তাঁহার কাছে লোক পাঠাইয়া এই নিবেদন করিলেন, যেন তিনি রঙ্গভূমিতে আপনার বিপদ ঘটাইতে না যান।

Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater.
32
তখন নানা লোকে নানা কথা বলিয়া চেঁচাইতেছিল, কেননা সভা গোলযোগে পরিপূর্ণ হইয়াছিল, এবং কি জন্য সমাগত হইয়াছিল, তাহা অধিকাংশ লোক জানিত না।

Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn't know why they had come together.

তখন যিহূদীরা আলেক্সান্দারকে সম্মুখে উপস্থিত করায় লোকেরা জনতার মধ্য হইতে তাহাকে বাহির করিল; তাহাতে আলেক্সান্দার হস্ত দ্বারা ইঙ্গিত করিয়া লোকসমূহের কাছে পক্ষসমর্থন করিতে উদ্যত হইল।

They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.

কিন্তু যখন তাহারা জানিতে পারিল যে, সে যিহূদী, তখন সকলে একস্বরে অনুমান দুই ঘন্টা কাল এই বলিয়া চেঁচাইতে থাকিল, ‘ইফিষীয়দের দীয়ানাই মহাদেবী’।

But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"
35
শেষে নগরের সম্পাদক জনতাকে ক্ষান্ত করিয়া কহিলেন, হে ইফিষীয় লোক সকল, বলে দেখি, ইফিষীয়দের নগরী যে মহাদেবী দীয়ানার, এবং আকাশ হইতে পতিতা প্রতিমার গৃহমার্জ্জিকা, ইহা মনুষ্যদের মধ্যে কে না জানে?

When the town clerk had quieted the multitude, he said, "You men of Ephesus, what man is there who doesn't know that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great goddess Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?

অতএব এ কথা অখণ্ডনীয় হওয়াতে তোমাদের ক্ষান্ত থাকা, এবং অবিবেচনার কোন কার্য্য না করা উচিত।

Seeing then that these things can't be denied, you ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.
37
কারণ এই যে লোকদিগকে তোমরা এ স্থানে আনিয়াছ, ইহারা ত মন্দির-অপহারকও নয়, আমাদের দেবীর নিন্দকও নয়।

For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.
38
অতএব যদি কাহারও বিরুদ্ধে দীমীত্রিয়ের ও তাহার সঙ্গী শিল্পকরদের কোন কথা থাকে, তবে আদালত খোলা আছে, দেশাধ্যক্ষগণও আছেন, তাহারা পরস্পরের বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ করুক।

If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.

কিন্তু তোমাদের অন্য কোন দাবী দাওয়া যদি থাকে, তবে নিয়মিত সভায় তাহার নিষ্পত্তি হইবে।

But if you seek anything about other matters, it will be settled in the regular assembly.
40
বস্তুতঃ অদ্যকার ঘটনা প্রযুক্ত উপপ্লবদোষে দোষী বলিয়া আমাদের নামে অভিযোগ হইবার আশঙ্কাও আছে, যেহেতুক ইহার কোন কারণ নাই, এই জনসমাগমের বিষয়ে উত্তর দিবার উপায়মাত্র আমাদের নাই।

For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning this day's riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we wouldn't be able to give an account of this commotion."

ইহা বলিয়া তিনি সভাকে বিদায় করিলেন।

When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
